the game is definitely better... i hope a lot of good games come from the Quake IV Engine. also there's a utility coming that will allow you to tweak the engine via a shader program for NVIDIA cards only.

you keep saying "from the quake 4 engine", but isn't the quake 4 engine just derived from the doom 3 engine?

Quake IV was in development for quite some time... there was art floating around for years that leaked. I thought Doom 3 was alright but really hated the texture quality. it was disgusting...not only does Quake IV improve upon the textures, the game feels smoother and faster. (except load times, hehe)

that Quak4 utility has some disturbing default settings for Ultra Quality.. for one it forces FP16 color precision, forces the ALU to do 16-bit math and forces the "fastest" precision (obviously not the best quality). these features could be useful for people on NV3x-level hardware or 128-Bit memory interface NV4x-level hardware but the NV40 256-bit 256MB can easily handle FP32 color precision and 32-bit ALU math operations providing the highest quality picture and color. i don't like how the utility cuts corners in that way but... but in others if you disable those items manually you'll see a slight improvement on the quality... not much though because Quake IV is already fairly good.

FYI, every place I've read says that Quake IV is "from the doom 3 engine"...

it is... and it's been modified so i don't see a problem with calling it now the Quake IV engine... if you want to get really technical the Doom 3 engine is largely based on the Quake 3 engine... just evolved with the new extensions added to OpenGL. i'm sure there were major rewrites and revisions obviously... but a lot of the codebase or stubbed skeleton functionality came from Quake 3.
