Linux Knoppix question [Archive] - ForumsHQ

I'm currently running Linux Knoppix (Linux live on a cd) on my pc. The hard drive in my laptop failed a few months ago, so I resorted to taking the HD out and just using Linux.



I have two external hard drives, and I have tryed everything to make it so I can write to them, but Linux won't let me delete or save any information to either of them.



I've tryed right clicking on them and going to actions - enable read/write... That did nothing.



I also tryed Knoppix - utilities - configure - slave NTFS. This did not work either.



So currently, the only HD space I am able to use is my 1gig of ram... which after Linux is loaded up, only allows 7mb of space to save any information on ... and that is swiped when I restart the pc.



Any suggestions?

Um what kind of info are you trying to save to them? Knoppix configuration and so forth? You have to format the drive in linux format I believe. Also linux is really lame with permissions. Depends on what you are trying to do. Give me an example. I have had this headache before too.



You know the cheat codes for loading your config and home stuff right? Well first you have to be able to store all that. So anyways try formatting the drive, if its in 'non linux' format it probably wont work. So anyways give me some examples of what you are doing and what it is telling you.



After I figured out how to save my config to disk, and how to enable it for write, more problems cropped up, so I went back to win-doze :D

Has to be a linux partition. Use disk druid or something like that.

Werd, look for a program called Qpart or Qparted or something like that, if you dont have disk druid. Thats stock with knoppix.

You aren't even supposed to have to go through that much of a headache.



Knoppix's 'Captive NTFS' program is supposed to be able to slave any hard drive to the knoppix system regardless of what OS it is for. That's what I have tryed using, and it doesn't work.



Erek, you seem fluent with Linux, any ideas?

This is true, but often when trying to save either config or home folder (I forget which) it DOES say that WIN/FAT-32 file system is NOT the proper file system to store this on, for some odd reason. It CAN read a win/FAT-32 file system, it just doesnt like to store the config there. If you partition it completely with Linux file system, then you shouldnt have a problem. Again, wish you would tell us what things exactly you are trying to save, and what messages you are getting. Is it just not mounting the drive, or not changing to write mode?



How many things that shouldnt be a headache are?

The drive is perfectly mounted. I can read and access the drive... I just can't write or modify it.

BUMP. Any more ideas on this? I was told that there are other options configurable in Linux to slave HD's. Possibly that it wasn't 'mounted' correctly.

i'll allow the all-knowing muff help you get through this one. she seems to have a response to just about anything. i hope you and her are able to resolve this problem quickly. i do know the answer and solution to your troubles but i won't be bothered to explain them. not the way you and her treat me, no way.
