Highest Record # Possible To Use?

Post by Necrosaro420 »

Say if I want to make a new map and start at room 50,000...could I do that? Or is there a limit of a certain number I can only go up to? And does that also go for items, textblocks, spells, whatever? Thanks!

damnit alright ...

theoreticly since most of majormud record number fields are 4-byte unsigned integers you could have a record number as high as 4.2 billion. however since metro likes to screw things up a few fields here and there i've noticed only allow for a 2-byte number to be entered, making the max value for that 65535. to be absolutley safe, 32767 should be the highest number because if a field is setup as a 2-byte signed integer it wont take anything higher than that. you could most likely use anything 2.1 billions because of VB's data type limitations.

Just a comment-- Btrieve AUTOINC fields are signed, so a 2-byte field would be 1 - 32,767 and a 4-byte field would be 1 - 2,147,483,647.

Btrieve ignores the sign bit, so applications that use Btrieve can use the sign bit as a "flag". Trying a GET operation on -6 gets record 6 (or -6 if the sign bit is set-- the point is though, only 6 or -6 can exist, there can't be a 6 and -6 in an AUTOINC field).

err basically "signed" usually modifies a variable, but in btrieve it doesn't, it ignores the signed 'flag' so the programmer can used the signed flag to mark variables.

heh, my translation
