Disable your modules!

Post by syntax53 »

I've seen a lot of boards that don't disable the un-needed modules that WG has when you're running a basic MajorMUD only board. There have been lots of security breeches because of this. Below are the only modules you SHOULD need enabled. Go into the offline utilities menu (WGSUMENU.exe) and choose "disable/re-enable selected modules."

If you have additional games installed, you'll obviously not want to disable them. If you want file libraries, don't disable them, if you don't want teleconference, disable it. This is simply what you will most likely want on a normal board. If you do enable/disable more modules than i have listed, you may get a warning when you alt-x (exit) that there are additional modules required. you'll need to either figure out which modules are requiring the modules that you just disabled, or re-enable them. To figure out which modules it's complaing about open the file that it refers to. For example, if it says "GALTEXT" is required, locate GALTEXT.MDF and edit it with notepad. it will tell you what that module name is so you can then re-enable it in the offline util. it also tells you in those MDF files which modules it requires.

good luck :)

just a note, just because they aren't in the tree, doesn't mean they can't be accessed -- which is the most common mistake. if they aren't a disabled module, there are ways of getting to them.

go into the disable modules thing and disable or enable something (to make a change) -- account display/edit is good to disable temporarily. see what it complains about when you alt-x. you need to renable whatever it is complaining about (or disable whatever is requiring it).
