.NET is microsoft's answer to java... basically visual studio .net takes all the old visual langauges (c++, vb, etc) and makes .net versions of them, and also adds the new language c# ("c sharp") which is a great language but is a blatant java rip-off.
Its essentially worthless right now for writing PC applications, b/c it requires the .NET runtime virtual machine, which most people dont bother to download. It'll be big in a few years tho when that stuff starts gettin included in your basic windows install.

one "cool" thing is you can make a program in many different languages and have it all compiled together to make a program...
like you can program an app using java, c++, vB, etc... it will compile it all the the same intermediate language.

yeah, that is definitely one of the coolest things about .net ... especially considering that some languages are great for certain specialized tasks (ie perl -> text processing, vb -> gui's, java -> sockets) and you can use all of them in one program... definitely sweet.
