Running MultiMUD...

Post by LordSoth »

I'd just like some input from some of you who have actually ran or are running multi mud systems. Would a Thunderbird 700 with 256 megs of PC133 RAM be quick enough to run two muds smoothly? I might be moving my server over from it's current PII-450 to a Thunderbird 700 system and I wanted to get some input on whether or not I'd get lag from running two muds on it.

lol.. its just mud man... i have run 4 muds on a pentium 200 with about 45-50 users and server response time was 16ms... of course it depends on your user load... if u got tons of users u might wanna think about 500mhz or faster (tons=50+).. seriously u dont need a monster just for wg and mud... of course if u got cash to play with just get yourself a amd athalon 1ghz and i guarantee youll never have problems with wg lagging..

Well keep in mind I'm running 3.20 and not 2.0... and I've been told that 2.0 is less of a strain on the system. And I want NO extra noticable lag from running the second MUD. I WAS avaraging about 30 connections for awhile but unfortunatly my connection problems with ATT persists and is driving people away. I'd rather not go spend money JUST for the bbs... I just happen to have the Athlon 700 sitting around that I won't have any better use for. Anyhow I figure once I can finally get switched to another provider I can get my user base back up but I'd imagine I wouldn't have to worry about more than 50 connections anyhow.

I have a question for ya Panterra X. Does the multimuds have to be run on a dos machine or NT machine?

I think it deppends on your WG platform,

i.e. dos run dos, nt runs nt.

to run multiple instances of mud on the same server (which is what i do i dont have 3 machines) you have to know a bit about hexing. On older versions of worldgroup (dos) you use a DMA server to connect muds runnning on different machines together.

I use wg 3.x and can hex majormud to appear as a different modules to wg so it loads it up like anything else... Thats how i can run 4 muds on 1 server without DMA.

Hope that helps at least answer your question hagrid....

You can also run multimuds the same way in dos as you would in NT.

NT should run much better though since there is a limit on how much memeory worldgroup and actually use on a dos platform.

I want to see someone run mud games that share user files and able to keep the games running at the same time.

So that you can exit one game and go into the other and keep all your exp and items and everything.

Well it does work if you don't have the two games trying to access the file at the same time but as soon as they try to access the file at the same time it will crash.

I need to try it in windows but it worked fine in dos untill I had two people trying to make new chars in seperate games at the same time but it can have two acconts in seperate games sharing the same user file.

Mines running on a PIII500 with 786megs of PC133 and my response time is 4ms. So you dont need a big box to run it. After all it was designed for slower PC's.
