PS2 Games [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by Hobo_Bill »

So I just picked up a PS2 for my girlfriend - she's been wanting one to play Guitar Heroes II.

Got the Swap Magic 3.8 discs, so I'm able to play "backup" copies of games. Been playing Need for Speed: Carbon, and loving it.

Any recommendations? I'm new to the console world - never needed one, with so many computers around.

Also - when playing PAL discs, my screen is all wonky. I've heard there's an adapter you can buy and hookup to your TV and PS2 that will convert the video feed into NTSC, but I'm not sure. Anyone know for sure what the fix is for PAL on an NTSC television?

God of War and God of War 2 are supposed to be amazing to say the least.

Those two games are why I want a PS2 but I am being stopped because of a pesky wedding I have to pay for. :argh:

So, as far as pal, I know with earlier swap magic you can special boot and it's supposed to fix it to 60hz and change the y-offset that pal uses. Personally, since I download all my games, I use a program that does pal2ntsc with yfix source patching. Google for it. It doesn't always work, but when dealing with the net you can't be to picky what you grab. I have a few DVD's of sources I couldn't get to work, I may someday go back and see what I can do with them.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE USING GOOD DISCS!!! I use NOTHING but Tayio Yudan 8x premiums, can get a stack of 100 for under $40 shipped. The dye is more metallic or some other technical crap and it helps preserve your laser, which is something that could eventually misalign/burnout. Places like afterdawn and others all suggest using them. I've never found them locally, so the net is the way to go (supermedia ftw!).

Anyways, my first month I went down to blockbuster and paid $15 for a month of their game pass. Got about 10-15 games from them that way, and may go back or hit up gamefly, though I hear they throttle your ratio if you send them back to fast.

Anymore questions, let me know. PM me if they get into more detailed/personal requests.

Umm..other than that, I dunno.

I download torrents, then burn the games. I haven't had any luck trying to copy rentals as I'd have to use dual-layer discs to fit them.

Have you found a program that shrinks the original to fit on a single-layer disc? Like for movies I use DvDShrink 3.2 and a CSS removal tool. It compresses the video to allow it to burn on one single-layer disc, with barely any quality sacrifice.

I'll have to look for that patcher - then burn the PAL discs I have to image and reburn with the NTSC patch, I guess.

Anything you can clue me in on as far as burning/patching etc, I'd be grateful.

I've got Swap Magic 3.8 - as it's the only version that will work with the PSTwo (the slim version). It does have a "special" mode, but when I've tried booting with it, my screen is still all wonky.

Rockstar makes a game called Mightnight Club 3 DUB edition. I like most all rockstar games. This one is a real thrill to play. You race in an open city, finding your own fast way to the finish. It feels like it moves VERY fast. Love it. Worth the D/L

95%+ of your games are single layer hobo. I literally open nero, tell it to copy-dvd, and watch it go to town. As far as your 3.8 being the only version that works with slimline....well...I have 3.0 and it works just fine on my first-model (read: bought the first week it was released).

If you're interested in downsampling a game that is two layers, I'd suggest searching sites like afterdawn for one of their posts explaining how to do it. I don't like downsampling, so instead grabbed the 2-disc GoW2, where disc 1 has none of the 2nd half movies, and disc 2 has none of the first half. They're the same discs, but with movies relinked that aren't there. You just switch which disc you're using halfway through the game.

Ok.. so I downloaded a torrent, unzipped it, and tried to burn only to realize that the file size is nearly 9gb. How in the hell do I get a 9gb disc image onto a 4.7gb DVD?

I use DVDShrink 3.2 to burn movies - compresses the files to allow it to be burned to 1 4.7gb disc. Is there a comparable program for shrinking PS2 games?

Dude, you keep grabbing the most f'd up ones. I've found two games on accident, TWO, that were DvD 9. There's more, but I just try to avoid them. You need a dual-layer burner and discs, and I have that, but I refuse to use it for fear the extra layer will hurt the optics on my ps2.

If you're interested in downsampling a game that is two layers, I'd suggest searching sites like afterdawn for one of their posts explaining how to do it.

I'm looking at a box of 150+ games and I've never had to do it myself. I guess I'm not really being helpful, other than suggesting you do some forums digging elsewhere, because it's just not something I've done. Sorry!

No worries. I've looked and looked, and just can't find anything really helpful. I've search Afterdawn and what not, as well.

I've got a dual-layer burner, guess I could go buy some discs. But now you scared me with your "damaging the optics" comment.

Guess I'll just pony up and buy the games that are DVD9.
