Editing Out Monsters In Ganghouses

Post by infinitipc »

Somehow I created a monster in the silver gang house by summoning that monster there with a spell that I wrote. Now that the monster is there, like the silver guardian, who is the only monster that is supposed to be there, they regenerate; but I don't know how this happened.

In Nightmare, Using the map function for the silver gang house, i went through every room and the room editor showed me that no permanant NPC/monster exists in any of those rooms under the placed items/monsters tab.

The other tab had numbers from the monster database file, wccacms2.dat. I even went as far as shutting down my bbs, editing the live directory, setting all of these values to 0, compiling an update file, running a database recovery, I did this for every room in the silver gang house. I started up my board, and guess what.. the silver guardians are still there and so is the other monster i've created.

Previously, i went into monsters and deleted the monster i created by inserting a new monster with the same name and deleting the old monster, his record number.

I have no idea where this monster exists in the db, I also don't know how he is appearing in the silver gang house like a ghost.

I tried to use a hex editor and search the wwwacms2.dat file for the monster # under other tab in nightmare, but it said string not found. I tried all the difft search variables hex, ascii, etc.

I did all my edits using nightmare on the live bbs directory while the board was shut down. I also compiled an update file, and then ran the database recovery. I know I shouldn't do that on the live directory, but I did.

Its as if I didn't though.. bcuz the ghost monster is still haunting.

Anyone have a clue on how I can get rid of this monster, perhaps by editing the wccacms2.dat file?

Any help appreciated,
Amber

Sounds like what happened to me a few years ago when I stupidly edited in "special" things for Christmas, Santa, Reindeer, etc. I removed them, deleted them, even had to reassign their number and try to overwrite them and they still were there. What it ended up being was every single one of them had to be killed in the game, I had to then bring up Nightmare, compile an update, move it over, run a recovery and bring the bbs back up.

running wccmmult.exe recovery or restoring wccacms2.vir doesnt fix it?

make sure you backup your dats before trying anything.

You know what, this is what I did, and it worked:

I reset the monsters that show up in nightmare under the rooms database, other tab with a number. Those monsters can be reset from the dat files which are wccknms2.dat, and as nightmare says wccacms2.dat. By following the procedure of 'resetting' majormud posted somewhere on this forum but only to get the vir files, change call letters to wbb if needed (when multi-mudding.)

Steps:

1. Do a system cleanup to backup the existing state of the bbs (Somewhere on this forum there is a msg that states how to edit one of your wgserv files to backup databases during cleanup)

2. copy the new dat files over to the root wgserve directory. Previously .vir files that you ICOMP'ed.

3. Now, Use Nightmare to compile an update file, you might want to verify bcuz all your new monsters are gone.

4. run a database recovery.

The monsters database editor is also reset and the .dat files that nightmare refers to in room editor 'other' is too. This is a great way of getting rid of monsters that are not supposed to be in certain rooms and areas. You also might want to go to the area and type sys reset as well.
