This year in English; a conclusion

Post by mojo jojo »

Before walking into class on the first day of English 101, I knew my writing was not adequate. I realized that many of my ideas were verbose and wordy. There always existed the assumption that I had to explain everything with appositives. Instead of writing better statements, I relied on appositives to clarify myself in mid thought while actually typing the sentence. Through this course, I progressively learned how to consolidate my ideas and thoughts into more readily understandable paragraphs. This text will reveal my understanding of the progress I have made as a writer in terms of style and versatility.

English 101 introduced the idea of writing into different genres and adhering to their respective conventions. I was not concerned until the class was presented with the second assignment that was void of personal experience. The rhetorical analysis was an assignment that required very strict adherence to a detailed and complicated set of conventions. Full understanding and comprehension of the canons and proofs of rhetoric were necessary to write the text. I struggled all the way to the portfolio in terms of revising the rhetorical analysis, but I am now confident in my understandings of rhetoric. The rhetorical analysis was a wake up call for me and provided me with the motivation to improve my work ethics. This motivation proved itself with my last two texts being a culmination of my dedication to receiving an A; they were of my best writing.

English 101 has been a powerful tool for improving my writing style and versatility. Writing in genres that are more than the typical high school personal texts allows me to develop stronger arguments. I have learned to integrate more than one genre of literature into a full text document that is a self-supporting article. On an academic level, it could be said I have benefited substantially from this experience.
