Posting your BBS [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by iNViSiGOD »

If you create a new BBS and really want to attract the public, please remember to post things about your bbs. Show us whats unique about it if anything or give a few examples. An example of what not to do would be:

Tommy : New BBS opened up telnet to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

First off, nobody likes telnetting to numerical addreses, there hard to remember if you want to check your script from work. If you want a domain name i would recommend http://www.dyndns.org/ and get yourself a registered DYNDNS domain name, its free and works great with static or dynamics IPs.

Secondly, say you have a domain name well good for you. Now you;ve advertised with a great forum like MMB, but you need to tell us about your system. Dont just say Here i am Come play on my BBS. Because if we dont know what your about, we might look into the system but probably wont take interest, it isnt an easter egg hunt. State what you have done or will do.

Third, I've noticed a severe lack of Globals and ANSIs on these new BBSs. Add flare to your system, make it look unique and for gods sake add globals Some people who log in like to know when the sysop is on or if a buddy of theirs is on without having to hunt for them in mud. Globals add alot of enhancements to mud as ANSIs add personality to your Worldgroup setup in general. Lunar Dynamics, and Morbid Faination are two prime examples of good systems with nice ANSI schemes. Nobody likes a dull green and yellow text based system.

And finally, nobody likes an asshole operator, like any type of retail industry you want to attract the users, not repel them. Remember, their there to play on your system, they hold no obligation to you. If they want to leave, they will. You can always find new users, but it takes 10x longer to get a disgruntled old user back than it does to get a new player.

Ask me intelligent questions on how to better your new system and ill help as well as MorbidBBS. There always willing to lend a hand.

EDIT:

Also, please remember to make the title of your thread something pertaining to the name of your bbs, there have been way too many "New BBS" or "New Realm" threads :cheesy:
