Two hard drives [Archive] - ForumsHQ
Well I have to hard drive is it possible to run nightmare from the second and have the wcc *.* on the second to and edit while the worldgroup is running on the first?
Re: Two hard drives [Archive] - ForumsHQ
prolly not, wg dbases are open when up and nothing else can access them.
Re: Two hard drives [Archive] - ForumsHQ
Nope... I just tried it.
Gives an access error, then restarts WG. (of course this also starts off a Recovery).
Too bad, that would be a nice feature. Theoretically, you would be able to make edits, create an update file. Then copy that file over the one in you "main" MMud directory. And the kicker would be that you could run an update from inside the game, all your edits would slowly be written into the Game with out ever leaving the game.
Oh well, maybe Syntax will be able to add such a feature in the next releases.... But if not.. Well it works great as it is, so be Happy :D

How about this, you know how you can have like as many differnt users account in xp right. Why not make one account running world group log out and log in to another and edit I wonder if that would work? any one have time to try?
Re: Two hard drives [Archive] - ForumsHQ
No, You can/will corrupt the databases if you force them open,
Worldgroup uses Btrieve for it's databases and it very unforgiving.
there are some fixing utils in the dev version, but once a dbase is
damaged it is very hard to fix. I think it's this way because of the
internal index structures. so, backup all your dat files, before you play with them.

you will never be able to edit the databases mud uses while it's using them. it puts locks on the file so that you cant do it. it's not a btrieve limitation, mud actually tells btrieve to lock them. if you haven't tried - you can actually have two nightmare's running, and have them both working on the same files. i dont think this could ever be advantagious but you can do it.
what you can do though, is copy your databases to another directory and edit those. then you would only need to bring the board down to copy the files over.

Re: Two hard drives [Archive] - ForumsHQ
Shouldn't you only need to copy over the Update file? of course assuming that you created one. But since the update file is only used during the first 5 min of the board comming up. You should be able to over write that file while the board is up. With no problems.
Ok I'll test this out when I get home. grin

Re: Two hard drives [Archive] - ForumsHQ
No, because when you edit items, monsters, rooms or whatever you do decide to edit it actually writes that to the database. When creating rooms, monsters, items, etc. etc. it will write all that beautiful information to the databases, thats why you need to copy ALL the databases.. :)
