I want a new (to me) car. I don't really know anyone to talk to about this -- my friends all have their opinions and seem to be fanbois of a certain model (each is different).
So I thought I'd ask, I'm looking for a car with these requirements:
1) Reliable -- I work from home, so only drive 2-3x/week, <20 miles. Once or twice a year I'll take the vehicle on a couple hundred mile trip.
2) Gas effecient -- not to the point where it increases the price
3) Automatic
I'm flexible on every other aspect. I'd prefer a car that doesn't have many other features, so that price is low.
My current car is a 2003 Chrysler Sebring, and this thing is on its last leg. Seems like a matter of time until it dies, so I'd like to sell it and replace it while I still can get some money for it.
Recommend a car for me, please. Make/model/year would be nice.

How much are you willing to spend?
Are you a big guy, meaning are you looking for another mid-size car like your sebring?

I'm going to look on Craigslist or another used-car venue. I'm 6'4", and I fit fine in the Sebring. Mid-size is preferable, but compact would also be sufficient.

Mazda 3 is affordable, comfortable, and even with the 4 cylinder it's quite sporty. My wife has a 2011, and is quite happy with it. Good mpg - 22/29 I think.
I'm also 6'4 and have no problem with the legroom. Only issue is bending down to get into the damn thing - for me anyhow, but I'm a cripple with a bad back.
Toyotas are always reliable, though the price seems to have gone up since the freakout over Japan's tsunami disaster.
Hondas are overpriced and made of plastic, but their engines are reliable, last a long time - just sold a 1997 Honda CR-V for $2k with 185k miles on it, and it was still running like a champ.
Used cars of any make/model are quite affordable, and most are very reliable, so it really comes down to what you're looking to get into.
Don't forget to Carfax before you buy - salvage, commercial, rental, wrecked, etc etc can be avoided that way.
