Philosophy of Mind

Post by erek »

here's a paper i wrote on the Philosophy of Mind, or more specifically my critical assessment of the argument that "Consciousness is in constant change."

further writing in the paper of "The Self"

i'm critically assessing Daniel Dennett's argument on the self: To have a self is to have accrued a substantial [and unique] autobiographical narrative [and to have the capacity to add to that narrative].

A poem, by me:
Quote from: erek Onward to that of a slaverly life,
What slavery? And to whom or of what?
Conception to bear in contemporary bits mayhap improper,
Then what purpose is there;
A slave to the arrangement,
A slave to the totality,
A slave to the artifice,
Pray to bear in through fasting and prayer that may,
May to be, to be,
To be of steadfast mind,
Betwixt mind and spirit or body and spirit as particular,
Incidental as transfiguration of the transhumant evolution,
Bearing the apprehension of comfort,
Comfort in the changeless one,
For none so steady that they remain unchanged forever,
But he who is constant amongst them,
Pray to bear witness, in meditation all ways,
Lest he who appeals to wisdom of the world fall on their face,
For in these bits of time is it not prime to wine and dine,
Perchance fine for thine, but within the rhyme gives rise to peace in mine,
There’s a rhythm that coincides,
Find the vibration of the metafrequent interval of the one,
The constant,
Pervasive and persistent the changeless one,
A pure pattern of perfect love,
Reflection in thine own heart,
Coincide the pattern of descript nature,
Beyond the collapsible representations of simulation and emulation,
Speak to embody the one, and thusly the coincidental pattern emerge.

further discussion of my topic:

Quote from: IRC how come?
basically because I believe that human memory is stored in the neurons of the brain and their interconnections, not anywhere else
i don't find the staring experiments to be very compelling
either
heh
anything else?
tomathyst, is my argument flimsy?
well i am still reading it
just finished page 6
* p0rk4alah (~chatzilla@CPE000c41aabe68-CM001bd7ad3f88.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com) has joined #Bible
* Jonah_ gives voice to p0rk4alah
* Peaceful sets ban on *!*atzilla@*.net.cable.rogers.com
* Peaceful has kicked p0rk4alah from #Bible (Banned: Auto-Bad-Word-Kick)
another wording problem at the top of page 7, line 5, the word "simpler"
finished
tomathyst, well?
So, where do you figure the collective memory is actually stored? You spend several sentences on how it might be accessed but nothing I recall on where and how it is stored.
tomathyst, well i would like to introspect that personally
ok
but i consider the akashic records
the book of life
i have not heard of that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Life
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akashic_records

* lavalite removes ban on *!*@75-168-225-214.mpls.qwest.net
I guess i'm with the skepticism viewpoint at the end of the second reference.
On a much more general level, this collective unconsciousness discussion is an aspect of the question of mind-brain duality.
Believers in mind-brain duality believe that memories are stored in both the brain and 'elsewhere'.
Disbelievers in mind-brain duality believe that the brain is the only place memories are stored.
heh
tomathyst, is my argument in the paper flimsy?
well one aspect of the paper that i find flimsy is the assumption that the communication or accessing of the collective memory has something to do with frequency. You know what frequency is - a measure of the oscillation of a wave. You are supposing a wave, which is not necessarily the case.
well it could have something to do with a wave
yes, it could
but not necessarily
but i was hoping to give rise to the idea of a new form
and that the wave served as an analogy
it is just that the whole idea of a collective universal memory system is far out enough without boldly making statements about how accessing it involves a frequency or 'metafrequency'.
yes, you wanted to propose it as an analogy. however, you then seemed to put more and more weight on that analogy as if you figured that it was really more than just an analogy.
maybe a thought convolution matrix
but really the whole thing is based on the idea of a memory recording system that seems to be without basis and isn't fleshed out.
yet the paper goes on about communicating with it anyway
tomathyst, so its weak? laughable?
so i fail to comprehensively cover the memory system
no, not the paper. the paper is ok i guess but it is basically a lot of detial and logic based on a very vague idea of memory storage in an even more vague 'other plane of existence'
yes

practical*
when you can come up with something practical or explicitly demonstrable, i am interested
the 2 wiki references speak of writing records, but who writes them, and on what?
tomathyst, i can actualize the universal memory through pointing to an overall awareness that the mechanisms of the memory is resonating patterns. the patterns are observable in an object manner in being a witness to behaviours of systems or groups of living beings
through time
that sounds amazing and cool, but can you access how many dogs i have?
in other words, what are the real results?
probably requires some training
then you have no results?
yet?
none that are directly confirmable by myself
i simply attempted to isolate where the memory could be by thinking
I mean you can say all day that you can access the memory, but with no examples then it just sounds like a personal fantasy.
what about citing how one learns through the memories
that would be like citing how to fly by flapping your arms a certain way, but without ever being seen to fly. no one would be motivated to listen.
heh
i don't mean to be awful, but i'm a results kinda guy
yeah
i seem to lack the experience
so if you can show that you can get amazing information from the universal memory system, a WHOLE LOT of people would be VASTLY INTERESTED in how you do it
well
i wrote that paper through fasting and prayer
and vegan diet
ok
i have nothing against that
the evolution of knowledge seems more in those states for me
maybe that is the best way to write a paper, i don't know
ok
you are perhaps putting yourself into a trance
a trance is generally a limiting of objective senses
what does that mean? objective senses
like seeing, hearing, etc.
* [tomathyst] (~consider@pool-173-79-107-88.washdc.fios.verizon.net): mobius mirror
* [tomathyst] @+#Bible
* [tomathyst] irc.igs.ca :IGS: A proud branch of Distributel.CA
* [tomathyst] 173.79.107.88 :actually using host
* [tomathyst] idle 00:00:20, signon: Tue Nov 24 19:52:16
* [tomathyst] End of WHOIS list.
the subjective senses are imagination, internal feeling, etc.
getting in tune with yourself, some say
so limiting the object senses help one become more self tuned?
that is the usual point of it, yes
ah
but it is not a way to get actual knowledge about the world
but it can get you into a state of review and focus of your thoughts of what you have experienced of the world
i will have to digest that information
meditate on it
about the trance
trance and meditation are about the same thing
i will meditate on Jesus and The Lord
do it
with my meditation i came to this
the collection of people learn through the mechanisms of a collective memory by adhereing to systems (but i should be careful to characterize this mechanical memory)
