Running MajorMud

Post by Zathras »

I have a question. I'll be going on a job soon that will not have any kind of internet access and am wondering if you can run majormud and play it on a home pc and be able to use megamud at same time?

dumb answer for a dumb question.

if you don't want a y/n answer, don't ask a y/n question.

very true ray.. I just answered his question.. but to be more in depth, you would just point your megamud to 127.0.0.1 to connect to your bbs.

@Ray...
Being an elitist about things MajorMud is like shitting on some guy that bought the same rusty '94 Chevy Nova that you did.

@Zathras
Run WGS setup wizard... when you get to the IP addy type in 127.0.0.1 (localhost) and WGS will listen for connection on the local machine. Your own machine becomes the network address you connect to with Mega. Localhost is actually an internet address... it's just a special internet address that doesn't connect to the actual internet. Your computer has a little feature that pretends to be the internet called a loopback address and this is that. It allows your computer to check function for networked software, allows your machine to run internal proxies, and is similar in a way to Ray checking whether his dick still works. Outside players won't be allowed in and people won't be able to connect to your server from outside your own machine either.

In Mega you can change the telnet address to 127.0.0.1 or you can simply type in Localhost and Mega will use the system's own loopback just as if you were telnetting to an internet server. The login screen will even display your local loopback as the IP addy the server is hosted on, because it is the internet address your WGS will be hosted on. It's just an internet of one system, your own.
You will see the same log in prompt, the create new character menu, etc... and if you log in using the Sysop username and password you set up in the WGS setup wizard, you'll get to says light yourself if you get out of hand.

Every one of us started running a WG server at some time in the past. Some are more experienced than others and your question reveals that you have a great deal of basic catching up to do. Some of the folks here feel that people who have only a love of the game to attract them but few computer skills, are depriving the world of perfectly breathable air.

Don't let Ray put you off. He treats everyone that way... especially when he feels sexually intimidated. Just ask him out and bring chocolates, some cheap wine, and flowers and he'll be on his knees before you can sneeze. Just ask anyone here. Ray likes Butt Secks and advertises for it accordingly.

What Ray meant to say is... if you want him to be seriously hot for you, first read the instructions, and read this forum... then read some more. This forum contains postings on just about anything you could ask but you have to use the search feature to find them. If you do this Ray will dress up in his cheerleader outfit for you.

Then follow the directions in The Ghost's sig line... play, fiddle, learn. Some basic networking info you can get Googling "how to..." Start simple. Do not jump head first into edits. Learn how to run the basic software first... then go muck it up.

People who make an effort to learn how to run a BBS themselves, even if they mess something up, makes Ray's ass pucker with delight. If you go load up the WGS and MajorMud bundle, get it running and log into it Ray will "love you long time."

and when you get stuck on something, come back here. This forum IS the instruction manual.

Some pointers...
Set a reasonable goal. The more bells and whistles you hang on it, the more bugs you'll have to track down.
Start simple. Just because you can find a whole bunch of add-ons doesn't mean you should add them all on.
Accept that you will fail and prepare for it... make backups.
Failure is good... we learn what not to do. Fail often.
Set up an archival copy of the WGS directory that you can drop in place once your software runs correctly.
When you begin to edit, first examine how a similar item, spell, or room is set up in the existing tables then make a copy of that item, spell, room... and play with the copy to see what your changes do.

If you want to get Ray really moaning for your giantwood club... set up a Virtual Machine and install a copy of everything there too. Then if you mess something up you can just reset the Virtual Machine and "undo" whatever made it crash. You can even telnet to the virtual machine is if it were a local network address 192.168.x.x.
When you change your IP setting to a public address... (your router WAN address) and your BBS becomes hugely popular...

(it could happen)

Then you can use the VM as an editing testbed without disturbing your hoards of rabid users.

See... those are what Ray meant to say... he just got distracted by his consuming carnal lust for you.
