Model Rocket Estes Renegade

I've been building model rockets. I like when its my own design and they fly great. I'll start showing you some originals and up scales.





Below is a completed Estes renegade model rocket. It's about 2 feet tall and is single or two stages.







I decided to lauch both stages for it's first flight.







The first stage took it up about 20 feet before it catastro'd. Looks like the engine compartment pushed itself into the middle of the rocket.





I built this little orange zipper out of the extra parts. Lost this rocket on top of a school. No recovery system.





Here's the renegade x2 i built from the rest of the renegade rocket. The body is a paper towel tube, slit and rolled to size. It has two fins for "tails" that are smaller than the other two fins as "wings". I had to offset the tail fins for balance. Looks cool too!



With the renegade nose on it, looks like a fighter rocket.







As you can see you load the thing backwards. It's not the cone that pops off ,it's the tail piece.



I flew this rocket once. It went straight as can be. There was an issue with the recovery system. I think i need to pack the wadding and chute in a different order.





FIN LAYOUT: On pice of paper mark the following. Wrap paper around body tube and mark fin placement.

The "tail" fins are Isosceles : 1 5/8" at the base and raises 3 1/4".

The "wing" fins can be Right Triangles with the body edge 2 3/8".



The Body tube is 11.00"

The Tail tube is 3.24"

The Original Renegade Nose Cone is ~4.25"



So, the overall height is 18.50"



The builder could combine the tail tube and the body tube together for a total length of: 14.25 inches.



PAINT IT

I painted orange down both sides and a ring of orange near the top. Let dry over night or more. I then took skinny tape to tape off the lines. Painted the window of the nose cone with high gloss black. Let dry over night. I then taped off windows over the glossy black. Painted the rest FLAT black. Let dry, removed all type.



You end up with orange pin stripes and glossy cockpit windows.

AA, I was into rockets in my late teens/early 20's, I didn't get heavy into it.



But about a ago I was going thru a "junk box" and came across 3 really old D size, 1 F and 4 G40-10.. No rocket bodies, but I did have an old RC boat hull... The D's I added a nose and fins to see it anything would happen, except for a boom or a phizzzz. 1 went phizz lots of spark, lots of smoke, 1 went BOOM and left a small crater, the last one launched nice for 30 ft, then just tumbled (taped the fins, instead of glue). The F was turned into a bomb for the boat.



The boat was a Radio Shack special, about 3ft long twin hull catamaran (Sorry Ray, no pictures/video) glued the rudders straight, removed the prop. Made an aluminum frame to hold the G40's, laid in a fuse from one to the "F-bomb"



Took it down to Lost Lagoon in Stanley park and prepared it for launch. Man of fuckin man, this thing launched alright, forward about 50ft, then hit a wave and flew upwards about 100ft before the fuse was lit and she went KABOOOM and blew peices all over the lake and scared the crap outta all the birds....

I was just over at AA krib this weekend, he was showing off his rockets. It's pretty cool, if I had more time I would not mind getting back into it. We built a couple in high school but that was 20 years ago....

Because the rocket ejects backwards, i have issue with the chute being cut from it's strings.



I added a BT-20 with a closed off end, into the back of this rocket. I'm going to stuff the chute into this inner-tube.



When the engine fires it's ejection charge, i hope the chute misses most of that force.



I'll have video and more pix, we'll see if it works...
