This game is beyond sale, it's a dated text based game with an ever dwindling fan base. If you do sell the game, you release it "under the table" and still face copyright infringement repercussions. You might sell what, ten copies? Twenty? Thats less than what most of us make in a week. The advantage of open sourcing it to the community vastly outweighs the small monetary compensation you may or may not receive. If it was a newer model game you were "borrowing" content from, and there was a bigger playerbase.. I could understand closed source. With the current status of things, I really don't see it.

That's a good angle, Speed, I hadn't really thought of it that way.

50 dollars would be fair, TGS W/GreatMUD, but you would need the blessing from Metro before I would consider it. Include an internal editor and Webserver automatic dat updates would be kind of badass.

I've posted this on numerous occasions, but people aren't listening. I have sent *numerous* e-mails to Metro letting them know I am temporarily using their content in my test realm, and I told them I would take it down upon their request. I have made public posts on several forums (this one included, I think that was around the end of February) letting everyone know that I am only using it for development to get the game engine to be a faithful recreation. I have not received any messages from anyone at Metro asking me to remove it. I do not plan on selling GreaterMUD with that content unless I have the blessing of whoever owns the rights at that time. We were using completely original content that DeathCow had created, but nobody was playing and it wasn't even close to being finished. That is when I made the decision to use their content until they tell me I can't. I haven't exactly made it a secret and I'm fully ready to take their content down upon their request.

The realm looks and feels the same as MajorMUD, absolutely, that was the point of this. It needed to be MegaMUD compliant as well. Metro wasn't going to do any more development on this game, and the community has been dying a slow agonizing death for years while Metro has been outright lying to us. It was either write a clone or watch a game I loved vanish into oblivion. I don't feel any remorse for doing what I am doing and I believe I am well within my legal rights. I say again, I'm not planning on distributing their content unless I get the right to do so.

MajorMUD in its current state is beyond sale. GreaterMUD is bringing web capabilities and several new features into a game that has stagnated for years. Think of it as MajorMUD 2.0, but just by a different developer and with a different name. I tried to work with Metro on this but they have outright ignored me just as they've ignored the community for years. I plan on selling about 100 copies in the first year, and that's based on the feedback I've gotten from the community. At $50 a pop, that's not much compensation compared to what I would have made had I spent those hours working on a more lucrative project, and I feel that's a testament to the fact I'm seriously not in it for the money. If I had given it out for free but put up a donation link, would you be complaining? Would you donate? What's the difference between that and asking for $50 for my hard work? It's not like I'm charging $1000 for my telnet server and $1000 for the MUD engine as Metro is. $50 is better than $2000, no? Please cut me some slack.

Agreed, and I've been desparately trying to get that blessing. Metro is supposedly entertaining offers on MajorMUD but in typical Metro fashion it's taking weeks for them to get back to any potential buyers. I believe Mike (Sysop from Entconn) has made them an offer of about $5000, but they've had him on hold for weeks. I believe if Mike does buy it he will work with me. I'm hoping whoever does buy it is also willing to work with me, as it will benefit all parties involved including would-be sysops and the end-users.

To Everyone:

GreaterMUD is seeing active development every week. I have the know-how, I have the time, and I have the dedication to see this through to the end. I already have another developer who has already contributed and is still willing to contribute more. Open sourcing would gain us absolutely nothing and it would be counterproductive as then we'd have hundreds of variations of the engine out there and no common ground between them. That would be the nail in the coffin for MajorMUD and what's left of the community. I'm not sure if I've mentioned it here but we're just a few months out from v1.0 so please everyone just hang in there a little longer, I promise it will be worth it.

You keep saying this, but I don't know why you expect something to happen to your potential open source project when it hasn't happened (in general) to other open source projects.

The only time open source projects are forked -- creating similar products -- is when

a) one project has a drastically different idea set on how the product should be developed

b) the commit rights are too strict, or the lead developer(s) not taking 3rd party submissions, for lack of time or whatever other reason

It needs to work with Megamud? Megamud works with other muds and not just MMUD.

So how about you get off your lazy ass, and do some real programming. Stop stealing someone elses work, and make something of your own. Something original and unique.

Design your own Mud client to go along with it and editor and then open source it, with the condition to get the source, you have to purchase it..

Case & point on copywrite infringement. A young fellow a few years back by the name of Mike Rowe, tried to start his own game company. He called it MikeRoweSoft and Microsoft had a shit fit, and threatened all sorts of legal crap on this kid.

So go ahead and try and promote GreaterMud as a unique game, First off anyone who is anyone is already reading this thread, and those that would actually play, are replying to it.

And your still registering up as an idiot, for directly ripping off Majormud.
