Couldn't figure out a more suitable place to put this, since it involves workouts decided sports would be the place.
Just recently started going to the gym again after 6-7 years of being sedentary. Never had a problem with my weight, besides the fact that I haven't been able to gain a pound since high school. Was sitting at 160lbs for about 10 years, been 168 for the last 2 years.
Taking Mass Extreme (a legal prohormone) and protein supplements, already gained 4lbs in 5 days.
Problem is, I'm fairly certain I've torn a muscle in my bicep.
Question is, should I work that muscle out or just let it rest until it gets better?
I get mixed opinions. Some think working the muscle out - albeit a little easier than I was before - will help it heal. Others tell me to keep it immobile, besides stretching to ensure it doesn't heal all bound up, until the tear heals completely (1-2 weeks). It's been 3 days since I tore the muscle, been putting alternating cold/hot compresses on it as well as Icy Hot and Tiger Balm to ease the pain somewhat. Can't fully extend my arm without forcing it while gritting my teeth, and my bicep is swollen where the tear is. Also have some tenderness below the tear, probably the tendons.
Any opinions?

If its torn dude do you really have to ask? heh
tearing and ripping are 2 different things. Normal 'ripping' pain that you get is fine to work through.. I have had ripping to where i cant bend my arm (usually happens the first few days into working out when i havent gone for a long time) but there usually isnt swelling. I would wait it off and next time dont go as hard in the beginning.
Once its gets better fuck the prohormone shit.. go down to TJ on a sunday.. and go to a RX and get some sustanon 250 1 shot a week for 8 weeks right in the ass and you will be up 40 pounds.

Re: Torn Muscle
I don't have any expert knowledge, but I do know that physical therapy after a surgery takes place almost immediately. But, they go very lightly. Personally I would think that stretching it every once in a while is a must. Don't overextend it, but don't let it sit still. A muscle is far different than a bone. Then again, of course I'm no doctor.
I did tear the tendons in my right ankle when I was fifteen, then retore them a year later, and again six months later. Now where there are supposed to be stretchy tendons and meat in my ankle is just jello. I occasionally step wrong and fall over and should "twist" my ankle, but I just get right up and walking.. cause theres really nothing there to twist anymore.

Re: Torn Muscle
The reason I'm taking this particular prohormone is due to the fact that it contains an estrogen blocker. The blocker will help counter-act the side effects of increased testosterone - man titties, hair loss, testicle shrinkage.
I was very tempted at first to get into something that would pump me up quicker, but I must say I'm gratified by the results I've gotten from the prohormone I'm taking now.
Only thing I'm having a hard time handling is my increased irritability. Increased testosterone can have an intense effect on your mood and temper. I have no patience for stupidity the last week or so, and find myself nearly losing it over small things.
Once I reach my target weight of 195, I'll either stop taking the prohormone or cut the dose in half, and cut the protein in half as well.
One nay-sayer at work is saying it's impossible to gain what I've gained in pure lean muscle - "It's nearly impossible to gain only an inch of muscle a year". But after research, I'm finding that with my body type - lean already - it's more likely for me to be able to gain lean muscle quicker than someone with his body type - chunky.
I may have put on 1lb out of 6lbs gained in fat, but I'm certain the rest is pure lean muscle.
Started at 8% body fat, I highly doubt that percentage will rise much with my mix of strength training and cardio.
On the topic of the torn muscle, I've been working with very light weights since I hurt it - 20 reps of 15-20 lbs only. Whereas when I started I was doing 60 reps of 50-75 lbs.
Abs and legs are much easier for me to work - 100 reps of 80-100 lbs on quads, 100 reps of 50-75 lbs on calves, 100 reps of 50-75 lbs on abs. I was a sprinter in high school, so I've retained some of my muscle definition in my lower body.
My struggle is working arms and pecs. I'm a computer nerd, don't get much of a workout with those muscles typing all day.

Interesting.. I suffered no real side effects from roids when i was on them.. except the obvious irritability thing but that goes away when you get off it. It did however work very well I was lifting almost 2x the weight i was before i was on it after about 3 weeks.. and i got fairly huge in a the 2nd month.

when i was on roids i didnt think it effected my mood at all until my wife called me about something stupid when i was working out at the gym and i just about ripped her head off over the phone .. i got off it shortly after

I know its not 'impossible' but i do know that 'chucky' body types convert the fat to muscle a hella lot faster than those without any fat. Thats been proven. You just cant tell through the layer of fat that most of those 'chucky' body types have (especially with roids and shit that increase your water weight)

Re: Torn Muscle
All cleared up now, whatever the hell it was. Worked my arm with light weights Friday, felt better by the time I got home.
Sunday I couldn't even tell I'd hurt it in the first place. I'm wondering if maybe I just had a stubborn muscle spasm, keeping the muscle all tensed up.
And I hate to burst your bubble, but fat doesn't turn into muscle, Ghal..
I've got a very thin body type, with the metabolism of a hummingbird, burning "energy" (proteins, glucose, etc) very quickly that could otherwise be used to form muscle tissue. A heavyset person with a slower metabolism doesn't use that energy as quickly, leaving more for muscle growth. If I didn't keep up my caloric intake, I could actually start burning muscle tissue as energy to keep the rest of my body going.

Re: Torn Muscle
When your not used to work, muscles hurt.
Re: Torn Muscle
I'm not a sedentary person, by any means. Every weekend I'm working out in the yard, so it's not that my muscles don't get used. This was completely different than the "ouch, I used a muscle" pain. Regardless, it's gone and I'm happy.
Gained 7lbs in 1 week, another 20 to go and I'll be happy. Have gained nearly 30lbs since August, after moving out of a terribly stressful living environment.

Re: Torn Muscle
first of all, there are 3 grades of muscle gears/strains
first grade strain involves small number of muscle fibers, localized pain, with NO loss of strength
2nd grade tear is tearing of significant numbers of fiber with swelling and pain, pain with movement and contraction of muscle, and decreased strength
3rd grade is a complete tear. no movement is produced and total loss of strength.
glad its resolved now, just want to clear a few things up.
us physios do see patients soon after surgery, usually starting day one, but it does not mean we start all kinds of exercises then.
as for whether to exercise or rest a strain like yours...
R.I.C.E to start off
rest, ice, compression, and elevation until swelling and pain significantly reduces
this is to allow healing and minimize the formation of scar tissue within the muscle
after scar tissse is laid down, we want to make sure he fibers are in the direction of the muscle tension, so we start with gentle exercises and stretches, then progress from there slowly
one other this bill, if you sit in front of your comp all day, pecs are indefinitely not the muscle group to build up, nothing worse for you posture. should probably stretch your pecs if anything.
and speed, you sure it was tendons? sounds more like you've torn you ankle ligaments
and yeah Ghal , fat don't convert to muscle, but i think you meant fat are replaced by muscle
