Ubuntu 7.04

Post by Hobo_Bill »

So I installed Ubuntu 7.04. Runs slower than dogshit, for some reason. I'm guessing because I don't have installed drivers for peripheral and system devices?

I'm as lost as a kiddie in a porn store.

Tried to download a utility (Envy) that would download needed drivers for my ATI GPU, but got some wacky error about build..

I'm a Windoze child, unfortunately. Used to having things handed to me on a platter, I guess.

Any advice from you 'Nix users on how best to familiarize myself with this new operating environment?

first: go with the latest version.

7.10 came out this last week, it's the next major version over 7.04.

second: i had a pain in the ass time with 7.04 on my ati chipset also (work computer). i have an optiplex 320, what do you run? mine was a ati radeon x1300. the way i got it to work was to install the ati drivers from synaptic package manager, then run ati-config --initial from the command line. worked great.

I have the Radeon x1950pro.

I opened the synaptic package manager, but didn't see anything related to ATI listed anywhere. All greek to me.

I'll have to read some documentation and familiarize myself with everything.

why dont you just download the drivers from ATI?

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206...x86.x86_64.run

Quote:

sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run

if your using ubuntu or any other flavor of debian apt-get is going to be your best friend (its the reason why i keep going back to debian linux versions)

try this

use
Quote:

sudo

to switch to root

Quote:

apt-cache search

then when you find something you want just use

Quote:

apt-get

it will automatically download all files needed to run the program and install them for you without much assistance from you.

most of the useful linux programs are in there.

So clue in a newbie - how do you get to the command line? Alt-F2, correct? Brings up a window much like the "run program" feature in windows... do I just type the command in there?

God, I hate feeling stupid. Such a learning curve.

I've printed out pages and pages of Linux information pertaining to Ubuntu. Should be able to hack it after reading up for awhile.

Problem is, Ubuntu seems to run so goddamned slowly, makes me wonder if I did something wrong during install, though I can't see what, as it's a step by step process.

Runs almost like it ran during LiveCD, before I installed it onto my system.

Command Line in linux is called the Shell. It should be in your gnome menu.

Turned out the command line is called Terminal. Gnome-terminal to be exact.

Couldn't find 'Shell' anywhere, and stumbled upon Terminal looking through the installed programs.

Updated to 7.10.

Problem is, everything runs so goddamned slowly. Takes fully 10 minutes to load any application I start (Restricted Drivers Manager, etc.)

Is this normal before loading required drivers, or is something wrong?

I followed step-by-step instructions that are easy enough a 4 year-old could read 'em, so I can't imagine anything going wrong during installation.

I'm excited to see how easy to use this OS is, but I'm fucking frustrated at how long it takes to boot, load programs, and do anything at all.

Welcome to Linux

Theres always something to fix on it. But thats part of the fun/challenge.

Did you get the gfx drivers installed?

Where is it slow? General operation? startup? when you open programs?
