Hi,



My car loses power while driving. Dodge Neon 04. Driving along at any speed the accelerator will stop making the the car respond. The car will jerk a quick time or two, maybe a dull thud back-fire, then the car just loses the ability to maintain speed.



To fix the problem, I press down on the gas and rev the engine up quite a bit! The the car don't get up and go, engine sounds fine just like in park or neutral. I let off the gas all the way, press in slowly, and the car goes fine for a week.



Shop didn’t know, couldn’t reproduce the problem, no error codes. 2nd dodge that do this to me.

how well maintained is the engine on this car? what kinda miles does she have? When you say it looses power, Do you mean the car dies? or just lack of power hitting the wheels?

I replaced sparks plugs once. Change oil on time for sure. It has about 35k miles on it. Was once a rental car.



feels like no power is getting to the wheels at all. Engine stays a runnin.

I'm no automotive expert by any means but that kind of sounds like your transmission is slipping.

I would NEVER buya rental car even if they gave it to me.



It kinda sounded like the problem I had the engine was misfiring, I changed the spark plugs and it fixed the issue but since you did that already it may be an issue with the transmission. My brother in law just got his trans worked on. The part cost him 13 bucks the labor cost him 2500. That was a bitch of a bill.

if you just changed the plugs try changing the wires and the distributor as well..

Car that age probably won't have a distributor, it'll be computer controlled by an ECM I think.

Sounds like you have a clogged fuel filter. If you're revving the engine to keep it alive, it's more than likely not getting the fuel it should be. Get a tune up, change the fuel filter, and use a quart of marvel's mystery oil every half a dozen tanks or so. When you get a tune up, they will notice anything out of the ordinary, especially a clogged fuel filter, which usually doesn't get changed at time of oil changes. It wouldn't be the distributor (....mainly because you don't have one like vis said), but if you did, the car would completely die and revving the engine wouldn't do a lick of good cause it wouldn't be sparking. I doubt its the transmission slipping, if it was slipping going at any speed the car would downshift and rev itself, he wouldn't have to do it. If its backfiring when you lose accelleration, something isn't getting through to your engine and creating a vacuum. It's simply not getting the fuel to oxygen mixture it needs. Could be one of your oxygen sensors or you could have an air leak in your exhaust.

Anyone know how much these oxygen sensors cost? Can i do the work myself?
