Full 10 Years Review [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by IslaScotts »

Upon hearing the song Wasteland by 10 Years on the radio, I instantly liked it. Something about the lyrics caught me, however the singing and music felt a little rudimentary. Even with the downfalls of the song, I decided I wanted to buy the cd. How wrong I was about anything being rudimentary. I started to listen to the first song Waking Up

"Distance and space allow emotions to age into faith.

Our bodies may end up alone but close.

Are you there can you hear me.

Are you there can you feel me."

Yes, I can hear you loud and clear, and I can really feel this. The music and lyrics really pull you into the emotion. The lilt of Jesse Kasek's voice brings your ear closer and closer to the speaker, drawing you further into the song.

This band from a small town in Tennesee began in 1999. Their early beginnings really show in their music, because unfortunately for them they sound a lot like an influence for them: Tool. Even their song titles and lyrics are reminiscent of Tool, such as Fault Line and Through The Iris. When you listen to the song Half Life you will swear you are listening to Tool or A Perfect Circle. With lyrics like this from Half Life:

"A precious gift embedded deep within your skin

But parasitic pleasures are closer than kin

Please expose your shadows

Such concerns are products of love

Falling in lies

One more fraud destroys our trust in you

Our love for you"

how can it not remind you of Tool, especially when you hear Jesse sing.

While the album is fantastic, each song it's own, and guitar fret work worthy of the most picky ear, it is a bit too much like Tool or A Perfect Circle for me to really set them apart from everyone else. I am a huge fan of Maynard, singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle, and if I want to listen to him... I will listen to the bands he sings in. I hope the follow-up album to The Autumn Effect will show what 10 Years is capable of. I hope they will really come into their own and maybe Jesse will show what is inside of him. This band gets a huge rating from me, but a few points have been knocked off for it lacking uniqueness or individuality.
