I posted this link a few days ago:
http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm
I talks about 4 types of mud players:
Achievers (powerlevelers)
Explorers
Socializers
Killers (pvpers)
While I don't think you can sit there and catagorize people into just 1 section, I do think, do to the nature of majormud and the influence of megamud, that only people who prefer the acheiver/socializer/killer type is left. There really is no exploration to be done, since majormud is pretty much entirely mapped, and metro releases a new mod every decade or so.
To sum it up: Most of the people that liked exporing and figuring out the stuff for themselves are long gone.
Just my take on it. I'm sure some people might like to see a change of pace. Or, people might like to add in the new element of having to make their own maps again, create their own scripts, etc. But that wouldn't be to "explore" your world, it would add a new element to the fight for the top 10 spots and trying to maximize scripting.
My 2 cents. Also, check out that link if you haven't done so, I thought it was interesting and gave some food for thought.

I did read it..it may be what made me consider this. Or at least why I'm asking rather than simply making my own choice. Of course I might be lead to some prejudice considering my particular postion here :)

Maybe put up a poll? As for myself, I'm kinda 50/50 on it. If its going to be a totally new board, i'd say sure, go without the map file and such. But if its an editted board with 5 new areas.. I'd rather have all the info on the edits.
Also, would be good to make a basic 'newbie guide' telling where the basic areas are and levels, maybe a map of the first couple areas to get people started.
And - Don't forget sys map. please.

Well it doesnt have dozen and dozen of new areas....But like one area i'm working on is like 20k rooms another like 4-5k rooms. I guess you could count them each as more than one area..like the area with 20k rooms has several towns forested areas a volcano umm lots of various towers and monster......Ok i guess im adding like alota new areas. laugh.
edit: btw I'm not exagerating the pure mass that i've added...one area is seriously like 20k rooms, and they aren't just like massive area's ive just barfed out I have put a lot of time into the construction of these areas.

My best times in mud were whenever a new module was released. Back in the old days no-one had data viewers and it was all about exploration. Some players were better at it than others and they reaped the rewards of items and quests etc...
I'm sure the majority of players just want the maps and paths to everything, but i dont think your board will be stuggling to find players.
please please please do not put maps in the export

I was hoping someone would say that :). I just don't think that many new boards have quite has much actually done when they open as I do. Not adding maps makes it worth my time to actually add new hidden areas into the game, so that exploration is something people can do. Its fully possible that a hidden area could go unfound for months and that new players wouldnt have to directly compete with higher level players to have an enjoyable time. I could fo example hide a nice mid level scripting area near where the fungus tunnels meet the avalanche area. Only people who explored the area would notice it. Or ya know even adding a boss out in the middle of the ironwood or something. There are just lots of things that are better about not having a full release of maps.
Now the amount of area that i've added to the game does tend to come with the problem I noticed on largely editted bbses..in that you almost feel lost in an entirely foreign world. But I hope to avoid that by keeping the game limited in levels and not just outright multiplying monster exp.

I'd say do that for at least a few months, like 6 months or so. Gives those who like to explore a chance, but they may not find everything. So later on the maps would be nice to have to see what you missed.

My take on this is dont do a dat period maybe post a list of item/spell drops and their mobs no locations, new spells where bought or just say obtained through lvl blah quest, new quests at lvl blah.As someone who takes full advantage of dats it takes the interest out of the game after the first week or two.People should have to read room descriptions to find exits, they should have to go fight a mob to see if they can take it.I like mme,but like megamud it takes away from people playing live for something other than boss runs and script hanging. As stated this is MY take.

The thing is..i can create a mme export without my maps.
