I'm currently working on making a new bbs. ATM there are 12,000 new rooms and more will be added. I'm not openning the bbs until every area has its own unique details and feel. In the above cap for example, the Vertigo Stronghold has been attacked by the army of the Dark One, and the surviving towns people have taken refuge on a small southern island. The few remaining guards fend off attacking orc troops. Of course the player can help! cause the king wants the orc leader's head brought back to him, before they attempt to retake the castle. And as always there is a reward to be had. So for now, this is just a teaser. :)

DeathCow... With all the work and debugging you have been known for in Majormud, I am thoroughly excited for your board.

Keep us updated! :werd:

P.S. I recall a couple of years ago when you reported bugs on my board and I became a tad upset, hopefully all is forgiven.

Yeah speaking of debugging, it took hours to make it so the monsters would kill one another...but i finally got rid of this crap.

Today while i was working on developing a map for the end of a quest it occured to me that I might have a problem. From what I've seen on some of the large scale editted bbses out there, players seem to really like new content to be added on a daily basis. As a developer I prefer making more complex edits with unique spells and abilities that often take a great deal of testing before i get them to work the way i want them too(mainly because i cant just look and see how it was done elsewhere in the game). Which now that I've typed it is actually 2 problems. The second problem is easily fix i suppose i just need to know how other people deal with having a second realm for the purpose of editting. I suppose i could just make a box for the express purpose of being an editting computer, but being at another computer would seem to cut down the amount of atk time, but I suppose thats just gonna have to happen.

So i suppose the question is do people prefer lots of daily small edits, tiny areas with the occational small quest with large edits and quests coming out i dunno, monthly? Or do they prefer to wait and let the larger more complex areas come out in a slightly quicker fashion...say 2 weeks.

I disagree.

The way I've ALWAYS done editing on my board:

1. Put the idea down on paper

2. Run the idea past the other staff members

3. Begin creating the edit

4. Spend a HEALTHY amount of time fine-tuning it in nmr

5. Import the edit on our test board

6. Spend at LEAST a week (sometimes we've had to do more) debugging it.

7. Post the area/quest.

In my personal opinion, I think the user-base would much rather prefer a complex well-done area that takes a considerable amount of time rather then one that is hastily put in and unbalanced.

You'll quickly find out that if you put an edit in, and allow users to begin exploring and working with it... and then change something about it (debug it), they will quickly become agitated and defensive. So it is always best to employ the practice of finishing it before it becomes public to your users.

We've put this into practice for well over three years on my board, and still have a very healthy user-base on the board.

Ok, I have been trying to get this same type of thing to happen, but I have no clue how, and seems you do. Mind sharing that information? See my post http://www.forumshq.com/showthread.php?t=8962

Would love to be able to do that, had the idea a while ago, but just dont know how to do it!

I dunno if anyone besides me actually likes looking at exports, but if you do I thought Id just toss this one out. Currently have have 4 completed modules that are sitting in there own seperate files and the module that i'm currently working on is far from complete, but it is moving along. My method for area creation generally starts with a quest idea. In this case im designing an area for level 70 questing. The area that ive started work on is basically just there to give the player the feel of what is going on in this area. The general flow of the area is intented to be rather circular, taking the players around to the sw. The town is getting around to how i want it designed, at least theoretically. The relative power level of the monster is still kinda up in the air but i at least have them designed with all the correct messages. My goal is for the town its self to be suitable for level 60ish groups with the castle its self, since the level 70 quests will begin here, to be better suited to slightly more powerful or at least well diversified groups. The inside the castle i intend for the player to need 2 keys from outside sources, 1 key will come from the king, which you can get by killing him or by asking him for it and tell him Annora sent you, which all of the assorted quest leaders, bathlazar grey lord and annora will tell you to do. The other key will come from an orcish general who was injured in battle and is resting in the siege camp west of the town. I might make it possible to get the key in some other way, other than just killing him, but that all kinda depends. Either way inside the castle there are a couple of ways to go, one way was made to benefit people who have disarm traps and the other was made to punish everyone else :)

The last room of the top floor will have 4 orc elites and 2 bosses. The big orc who will be sitting on the throne will be protected by the next boss. and the little orcs will protect the little boss. (I know how all thats gonna work out) The big orc boss is gonna be a little funky he's just gonna sit there and mock you while you battle with the rest of the room and he'll get up and fight once the little orc boss is dead. Anywho once all thats said and done you'll get the stuff you need to continue on with the quest. Now if you look at the rest of the areas out there they are really messy and somewhat odd looking, I do intend to make some filler out there maybe a sub plot here a scripting area there. There are several small areas that will eventually be villages they will have the various NPC's that you'll need to finish your quest. There area 4 or 5 tower structures which will lead to higher level areas and possibly to a portal navigation area for the area. Also there is 1 area thats intended to be a ruined castle that I will give player the opertunity to purchase and revovate for a large cost. Besides that there is a castle that will be where the quest boss is and 2 large dungeons that are respectively the northern and and southern sphinxes(the dungeons are suppose to look like sphinxes..i tried). There are a few areas out there that are meant to be quest areas for various classes, namely gypsy missionary thief quests but there needs to be spell quests out there too so i'll need to come up with a concept for them.

Ok im just rambling so yeah if you wanna take a looksee at where im at(this is the last module i want to finish before opening the bbs) please feel free to. I wouldnt mind constructive input :)

oh yeah, the area is in 2 different places, although the northern one doesnt have any real use yet. in the north it starts just west of the waterfall on the silver river, 14/1 i dont think its connected to the game atm. And to the south it begins sw to the grassy clearing in the slums..with 1/10407..there are some various other little things still in the dats like a couple undeveloped classes, the enchanter is gonna be like a mezzer and the witchdoctor like an anti bard. either way just ignore that crap..its just stuff im toying with.

Did you close the thread quickly did only 9 people care enough to vote? Either way it was an interesting thread.
