I think if there are any long posts out there worth taking the time to read, they are MrBlack's. A lot of long things are just a bunch of hot air, but Mr's writing is usually very well thought out and contains many good points. Maybe in the future he can break his posts into several installments, and leave off each one with a cliffhanger, so we just can't wait to see what he has to say next:cheesy:

If you have a porblem with someone that can't speak English, step back, take a look at them, are they older, or younger than you? Do YOU think you could learn a second language at your age? If not, why would you think they could? Alot of you will say you think you could learn a second language...but realize this...their second language is ENGLISH!! English, one of the MOST difficult languages in the world to learn as a second language. Have you ever paid attention to yourself speaking, writing or even how others speak or write? It's a language of almost complete nonsense. Words spelt completely different than they sound, words that have three different spellings and meanings. But to someone that's spoken Spanish for a couple decades, to learn English in a few years would be extremely difficult.



Definately. I think it is a major handicap to the US in foreign relations when all the other countries have to learn OUR language to communicate with us, and we won't learn theirs. Some may think this makes us look "powerful," but I think it just make the United States look arrogant in the eyes of the world community. In other countries (Europe especially) kids learn English from grade school on, while the most the average American will probably get is a year or two of basic conversation in high school. I think if Americans made an effort to learn more about the languages and cultures of the globe instead of expecting everyone else to conform to us, things would get along a lot better.

Our grocery stores throw out tons, and I mean, literally, TONS, of food each week, all which is still good enough to eat or drink. (All sell by/eat by dates are generally marked well ahead of the actual day they go bad, by federal guidelines). All that extra food could be given to the poorer countries. There are a few troubles with making this work. First, if one takes your point literally, to take all of the "throw outs" of American grocers and send them to other countries chances are by the time they are inventoried, packed, shipped and distributed across the globe, they will have spoiled.



The reason grocers buy so much excess and let it go to waste is because it is still profitable to them. To send the excess food directly from the farmer to the end (foreign) consumer, you would have to make it no longer profitable for the grocer to buy such quantities.



You said yourself that it isn't our business to meddle in the affairs of other countries and, sadly, many countries would believe that this food we were sending wasn't just out of the goodness of our hearts, and that we had some "angle" or ulterior motive (since we usually do). Further, America is a nation of fiercely independent people, and so are other countries. They may just resist taking our gift because they feel they need to "make it on their own." Diplomacy is a bitch.

For those that think learning a second language is easy, I challenge you to study something along the lines of Chinese or Japanese. Those are comparable languages in difficulty to learn.



I am in my 6th year of taking spanish and still am not fluent. I can talk in short sentences and have a pretty broad vocab, but I could not survive in a foreign country on it. It's not nearly as easy as people think. They hear a couple words and then take a class and realize that.

At least the words we use don't have 50 goddamn tenses like spanish. I dun care what ya say..I'm stuck on spanish being hard as hell to learn.



I know some of you know spanish and learned it in school..ok, so whats your point? I didn't say you can't learn it..you can learn anything with the right dedication. I'm just saying they bullshit to much when they made the language with 50 different verb endings.
