LAG (Newb Question) [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by Sean »

Sorry this is quite a newb question :)

Im runnin a p4 533mhz bus with 512mb rdram off college ethernet in my dorm room. Got a downstream of about 1.5megabits average.

My test users are experiencing quite a bit of lag. Is there anything I can check on to reduce the lag? I dont think Im running any other programs that would take up much bandwidth.. so wouldnt this kind of a connection call for a fairly lag-free bbs?

What's your upstream....down is how fast you pull information, not how fast you push =)

I found this quite interesting....

I got a 233mhz comp with 256megs of ram... and I don't suffer from lag... if I put my 1.7ghz comp w/ 1.5gb of ram with the SAME amount of users I lag like a bitch.... hrm... new hardware with old software... doesn't like it much!

He's probably got an upstream cap. Upstream is harder on an ISP than downstream. A lot of colleges cap that shit pretty low. There are ways to get around it tho. Download FUGlobals and hit #, see what your system resources are pulling. If it's the average 0-3%, it's definately your connection.
