As it turns out, Rochester carbs are some lame stocked parts. Corvair Underground claims that they haven't included a fast idle lever in their master rebuild kit in over a year. They also don't include the float spring, float spring lever, or the actual float. Also no fuel enrichment needle. I'm kind of upset, because this kit is claimed to be a "master" kit.

As far as the Fast idle lever piece that broke. Stu knows a guy who runs a machine shop and the guy graciously agreed to "see what he could do" to machine 2 new assembly's out of aluminum. From the sounds of it, the guy knows his shit and will have the parts back in around a week or so. I'll post pics of these newly fabricated custom pieces if he is able to produce them.

We've decided that if he is unable to fabricate this piece, we're gonna hook the carbs back up, and see how crappy it runs without the one fast idle. It should just be tough to idle when it's cold, but i can rig up a choke lever especially for that if needs be. Otherwise, we're gonna call up Summit racing and just order a new set of Holley carbs ready to go "outta the box".

I put the Rochester carbs back on the car today....without both fast idle levers on both carbs....the car fired after a few but shut off quickly....I noticed that the accelerator levers were missing....can't find em, don't know where they went....I fabbed up some quick levers outta coat hangers and fired it up...after adjusting the setting on those, the car runs great....I'm not going to drive with the carbs the way they are now...i don't know how safe it really is...anyone with carb knowledge have anything for input on this?

good question...I'm out of work currently, leaving me with no money what-so-ever to put into this project...For now, i'm having to keep the Rochester carbs and try to make the best of it...As soon as possible, the Holley carbs are going to be ordered...The Rochesters are working good enough now to start the car up for people that wanna hear it run...I wouldn't drive it on the road with them though. okay, i take that back...i will drive it down the road if this rain dries up...But i don't think i can trust them in traffic or anything...Today, i'm actually gonna do a budget lowering on it...I found some spring stabilizers that i had bought years ago for another car, it'll give the Corvair a 1"-1 1/2" drop...If it looks alright, i'll leave em...I'll take some before and after pics to compare...let me know what everyone thinks.

I think I need to find a car for 2k-3kish dollars that will last for two years with minimal routine maintenance. Any website suggestions other than craigslist and ebay? Not really able to drive too far to get it, and trying to avoid getting a loan because I can't afford to pay full coverage insurance on top of a car payment.

I'd scout out some areas away from Chicago. some kinda suburb. I used to go over to east or west Dundee for cars alot. Otherwise, I'm not sure of too many decent websites...Chitownracing.com always has cars for cheap. Some days are better than others. I bought the Corvair off that forum. I'll keep my eyes open for ya though...Any preferences? Low maintenance tells me you're lookin for a Honda or yota.

45 minutes into installing the spring stabilizers, it starts downpouring.

Rain delay...I'm wondering if I should just lower the front...I'll do the fronts first and see how it looks. Damn rain when i wanna do something.

Actually, I'm about 3 hours away from chicago, up the coast of michigan. Honday/Toyota would be pimp, but I'm not holding my breath. Almost thinking of buying something a bit cheaper than my max, and saving the cash for the first thing that goes wrong lol.

Can't wait for the pics, and I hope that rain isn't moving up my way!

ok down here we have lots of covairs in junk yards. shipping would be minimal.

most of the wreaking yards lets me have small stuff. tell what you want and i'll trip out and look.
