Remort Revisited [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by Rootc »

Couple ideas for discussion:

Here are my ideas on remort. At level 75 a character has the option to remort. When they remort their character is taken back to level 0 and their experience is set to 0. They get an increased remort level. The first time you remort your remort level would increase to 1. Most importantly, when you remort you get to pick from a list of special skills or enhancements that will permanetly stick with your character. Example: when you remort you would be able to pick one special ability from a list of approx. 50 new abilities.

Some possible abilities:

Mana regen +20%

Crit cap increases to 50%

Extra swing 30% of the time

Spell power increases by 15%

Incumberance + 15%

Dodge +10

Dodge cap increase by 10%

Accuracy cap increase by 10%

Speed + 5%

AC + 6

DR + 3

Smash power increased by 20%

Backstab increased by 10%

+ 100 hitpoints

+ 100 mana

yourself and party to a specific locals

Immunity to poison

Immunity to Confusion

+10 min damage

+5 max damage

+7 crits

+100 night vision

+20 protection from all elements

+magic resistance cap increased by 25%

+20 magic Resistance

Everytime you remort your character could pick an additional enhancement. So if you remote 5 times you would be at a remort level of 5 and you would have 5 extra enhancements.

Completed quests / race / alignment / class could all play a part in the remort abilities that would be available to you.

You should have the option to continue to play your character up to a higher level. Perhaps level 100+; however, there would be benefits to remort and rebuild your character to be more powerful then ever. Also, with the remort level in effect it would be possible to limit items to a specific remort level. This way the low level weapons won’t be hoarded by the super characters whom are about to remort. It would be fun to have a simple level 75 quest obtain a somewhat powerful low level weapon restricted to remort level 1. Perhaps you could have a level 80 quest that would provide provide a weapon that is restricted to remort level 2 or 3. There could be advantages to build a character above level 75 even if you do plan to remort.

The problem with allowing characters to continue to level past 100 is that you have to create tons of new content to keep the game interesting at all. These characters are usually scripters that are only at keys once a week. This remort system rewards people for actually playing their characters. Also, this system would give value to a low experience table.

Thoughts and comments on the above remort ideas?

i think that's an awesome idea

questions:

would you be able to change your class/race when you remort?

would you keep your current quest abils and spells when you remort?

Some of those abils seem like they'd be hard to implement

This is up for debate. Generally I would say no. Opens some potential abuse problems. Power level a horc theif then remort to a kang paladin. Earned the exp for a thief but just remorted to a paladin = abuse. It would be cool that when you reached a milestone remort level (Remort level 5?) you could be presented with the option to choose a new more powerful class. This new class would have a rediculously high exp rate.

would you keep your current quest abils and spells when you remort?

Again - up for debate. My opinion is you would lose everything other than your previous remort skills. You have to completely rebuild the from the ground up. It's not like you would be doing this every other week. Part of the penalty for a more powerful character is you have to start over from nothing. Not like you won't have a stash of gear waiting.

Some of those abils seem like they'd be hard to implement

Not so hard if your working from a new code base. Don't think in terms in what is possible with MMud.

This type of remort would satisfy both people who like the idea of remort and the people who hate the idea of remort. If you like it then do it. If you don't like it then continue to level your character. No one is forced to remort. It's an option designed to keep the game interesting. This would allow for a greater flavor of characters. Would also encourage players to be at the keys more.

Sounds good, but it seems the rewards should be a little greater. After getting to level 75, all you have to show for it is an extra 4 AC? Meh.

Would be good for the bonuses to attach to level. I.e. AC = (level * .1 * remortLevel). Wtih this happening, you'd also want to increase the xp table for the remorted.

I'd say loose the spells. You're a new char. Specially if you decide to change alignment this time round; you could remort twice and have all spells for all alignments.

First we would need a code base in which said system would work before we can start debating the balance of the system :\

But, I agree that a remort system would be great. If speed finished his recoding of MMud (or I ever do mine), this will probably be a great feature to put in, not just adding stats to remort, but having remort only races and classes as well, or even chained classes ie:Paladin -> Templar -> Crusader -> Holy Knight or something.

I just have one question...this all sounds great, but where did the name remort come from?

Remort

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Remorting is a technique used within some role-playing games, notably MUDs, whereby once the player character reaches the level limit within an RPG, the character can elect to start over or be remorted back to a weaker version of the player's character (back to level one usually). Yet the character has an added advantage, or power, that the player was unable to achieve before remorting. The advantage is usually access to different races, avatars, classes, skills or even different lands within the game that are not available to characters that have not remorted.

The term's origins are unclear but are thought to distinguish re-mortals (reborn characters) from mortals (normal characters) and immortals (retired characters).

i think it's a wonderfull idea..but coding it wil leave Many holes to work with, the example you gave is prolly the perfect one.

if you want to make this come true you will have to exclude some cases concerning the holes..my 2 cents..but in geneal wonderfull idea..will give some boost.

My idea on remorting would be that once you've remorted you'd keep skills that your previous class had. Metro's take on it is that each class would have a couple class choices that had to choose from. Like a warrior would have the option of become like a Mage with combat-3 or a warrior with combat-5...
