Apple’s Intel Switch Editorialized:

Expect 101 editorials on Apple’s biggest “switch” ever to pop up on the net over the next week. Hell, why wait until next week? Editorials are popping up everywhere within mere hours of the announcement. Sudhian wonders out loud “has Apple seen the light or plunged off a cliff?” while the gang at Designtechnica ponder the future in this article titled “Anticipating the other shoe and looking ahead”. Its not something I can easily quantify on paper, but I can't see Mac faithful taking well to this announcement. I'm not going to predict a mass exodus or uprising, but I'm also not at all sure how Apple's going to deal with its unhappy PPC users.

As far as I've been told, the end-user won't even notice a difference. It's still gonna run OS X and OpenFirmware, they're just replacing the IBM G5 with an Intel chip. Only developers will really see the difference. Apple sucks anyhow imho :)

if they switch to intel, there's absolutely no reason to buy them anymore. you can just buy a cheaper intel

Mac users like the software and the interaction, not the processors. The end user won't know any better, and you can't just install OS X and such onto any Intel processor.

Exactly. The only Mac users that Apple would need to "worry" about losing would be the serious fanboy flag-wavers... :baby:



although I don't know what option they'd really have other than maybe BSD on Athlon, something like that...

Conrary to belief, if they plan on migrating to x86 it will be compatible with the x86 architecture. Thats also in the works.

OSX is based on BSD Unix from what i've read.

I've only read complete opposite, that they have no intention of doing so. Where'd you see this? They don't want to lose OS X, nor enable it to be swapped into any ole Intel system. This would be Apple suicide, don't you think? One of the only things that they have going for them is exactly what Ray pointed out in the beginning, and they'd lose all that with this step.

the point is, if they get it to work on x86, it will work on any x86, so it will be much more widespread. also you don't have to purchase THEIR hardware to get the software to run (like you currently do)
