Linux RH9 Question [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by iNViSiGOD »

Ok, heres the deal. I recently upgraded my old AMD XP2500+ system to a spanky new AMD64 3000+. This left me with a spare KT400 board and an XP 2500+. I decided to take the extra parts and make myself a Linux RedHat 9 machine.

Im a big fan of Firefox so i decided to put it on my RH9 machine as well. The problem is that after install, the browser loads up great, but theres Program association icon in my programs menu nor is there a shourcut on the desktop, so my question is this: When you install a program on RH9 or any other distro of linux (im sure alot of them setup the same) what is the default directory that 2nd party programs like Firefox, RealVNC and others installed to?

Im very linux illiterate but i hope to use this to learn from. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

/usr/local/bin

/usr/bin

/bin

you can also use the tab-tab to auto complete...

"fi[tab][tab]" will show everything that starts with "fi". It will search thru your path

Got it, some users on the [H]ardForums were gracious enough to let me in on a way to search for the executable (i know linux doesnt use EXE's im just making a reference).

what was the way?

anything can be an "executable" ... just have to give it execute permissions, or simply read permissions if it's a shell script.

true. I wrote that originally, but i wasn't sure if the name of the executable was just "firefox" or "firefox1-2.0" or some junk like that ;)

that's why i said fi[tab]..
