I was on aforum the other day, non-mud related, and someone started a thread. "How do I play Text based muds" people were tossing suggestions all over the place, but no one really set down to explain how we do it. Now personally I'm versed in both Majormud & MUD in general. BUT I know what works for me, maynot work for someone else. I recommended the person come and check out MMB for the answer to that very question, primarily as we're mostly 100% mmud phreaks.
So for me, I prefer to start a Warrior (if default Dwarf) for the cheap xp, because I am the king of reroll (grin). But what I work on first and formost is health; Strength, Int, agil, charm, then wisdom.
theb i'll hang out in newhaven til exp for lvl 6, and then move to the cave worm til lvl 15, then out to slimer. By the time your at slimebeast, you should have some friends in the realm, and they'll help plvl you.
Suggestions for Newbies on playing Majormud
Re: Suggestions for Newbies on playing Majormud
Make a kang missionary with health and wilpower, sneak into the strange mansion (utilizing safe rooms along the way), mihe when necessary, gank the locket and collect 100 gold. Then, if its a new board, repeat process for griffon shield. Now take 100 gold and hide it somewhere. Reroll to a elf with 90 charm, go buy some scalemail armor and a battle-hammer, reroll to a kang/dwarf cleric/paladin with high STR/hea (and a little wil), find your armor and weapon, proceed to make 10k an hour in the graveyard.
They could get rid of a few rooms where shades won't follow and this would be a lot harder to accomplish, but as it stands, I don't think my level 1 missionary has ever died on the slum mini-quests. Its really all that easy. I like having golden battleaxe 10 hours after the board starts up. If you're nice enough to get a sysop that will give you -Eps to do your level 10 quest, you can add a griffon shield to the mix. 10 hours into the game with griffon shield and golden battleaxe on a sneaky warrior kinda guarantees a sort of early game dominance...Especially if you put a tanker paladin/cleric next to him.
Of course, by level 30 or 40 you're probably going to want to trade in the sneaky warrior for a class that matters. Either by a trade, as many fools will oblige you to, or a reroll.
Of course, most edited boards, level 6 in newhaven would only take an hour so there isn't even the need to do all this "effort".

If someone asked how to play a text-based mud, you would be wrong to inform them as to which race/class to pick and where to go. These people have probably never even heard of MajorMUD, and the muds they are playing on probably have Vampires and all kinds of other races. You'd have to inform them how to read help files, how to ask questions during the game, and how to find a list of commands that will help them in each specific game. They're all very, very different.
