Anyone see the movie Reefer Madness? Check out this article on what lawmakers are attempting to do with marijuana laws.
Reefer Madness
Re: Reefer Madness
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Alarmed by reports that marijuana is becoming more potent than ever and that children are trying it at younger and younger ages, U.S. officials are changing their drug policies.
More potent than ever? Slightly, but not alarmingly, and nothing that is dangerous. The only reason anything could be considered as more potent is because more people have done experimentation with hybridization, cloning, and general plant genetics. This leads to better strains being created.
The number of children and teen-agers in treatment for marijuana dependence and abuse has jumped 142 percent since 1992, the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University reported in April.
Yeah, use numbers instead of percentages. Good way to skew results. The population of the united states has also gone up since 1992, proportionately this 142% is much smaller. Also, these teens aren't putting themselves in treatment. Parents who don't have time to talk to their kids and find out what's going on have them in treatment. Lawmakers such as the ones who are attempting to make marijuana more illegal are the ones putting them in treatment. If it were up to the kid, he wouldn't be in treatment, cause he knows damn well he don't need it. And if he does, it's because his parents fucked up somewhere along the line and can't figure out what they did. Taking responsibility is something that society forgot how to do as of late.
According to the report, children and teens are three times more likely to be in treatment for marijuana abuse than for alcohol, and six times likelier to be in treatment for marijuana than for all other illegal drugs combined.
Yeah, because people put them in treatment. If you look at how many people have ever gone to the hospital due to an overdose, or are medically suffering problems, or have had their stomach pumped, or have been rushed to the hospital due to a drug-related incident, alcohol and other drugs are going to reign supreme and marijuana won't even hit the charts. If we'd stop thinking that therapy or a psychologist is going to fix our kids and start taking responsibility for our fucked up parenting, not so many kids would be in treatment.
And it found the age of youths using marijuana is falling. The teens aged 12 to 17 said on average they started trying marijuana at 13-1/2. The same survey found that adults aged 18 to 25 had first tried it at 16.
No, it found the age of youths that ADMIT to using marijuana is falling. It's becoming more socially acceptable, slowly but surely, and these kids who would not have answered "yes" in fear of their parents butchering them in the past have no problem with saying yes in these days. Twenty years ago, not too many twelve year olds would have admitted to smoking marijuana. Today, their dad grows it.
For National Institute on Drug Abuse director Dr. Nora Volkow the final straw was a report her institute published in May in the Journal of the American Medical Association (news - web sites) showing the steady growth in the potency of cannabis seized in raids.
According to the University of Mississippi's Marijuana Potency Project, average levels of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, rose steadily from 3.5 percent in 1988 to more than 7 percent in 2003.
Yeah, because of the internet. More people know how to introduce Co2 to their crops, they have better access to lightning, more advanced grow boxes, thermometers, cloning solutions, mylar, the advent of purchasing seeds online overseas, yadda yadda. Of course home growers are going to have better shit now than 30 years ago, it's about information exchange. Thirty years ago my dad grew a couple plants in his back yard using ground soil and sunlight. Today he can go online and find out how to grow twice as much weed in a three foot tall cabinet with under $100 in supplies.
3.5% - 7% THC content is an understatement, since anything homegrown around here is gonna be 18-22%. That's why we like it.
I don't have a valid opinion on the medical part of the article, I'm not a brain surgeon...

Re: Reefer Madness
Allow me to be frank, to someone who obviously enjoys pot or at least supports the legalization of pot. I know one too many potheads out there. I mean the habitual, wake and bake types. I would not want to see my child end up like that, nor anyone elses child. That isn't a life, it's a conviction to eternal idiotic escapism. I am not saying that pot cannot be used as a recreational drug, ONCE IN A WHILE.. but come on... the pothead life is no life at all. Unfortunately making it legal or keeping it illegal will not change a damn thing AND furthermore if it was not pot it would be something else.
I don't think the issue is really pot at all... i think the real issue is medicinal and recreational drugs are used incorrectly most of the time. Alcohol, pot, X, vicodin... each drug is completly used as an escape and not just as recreation or medicinally. Most of these drugs have some kind of medicinal use, but unfortunately the human population has raped the exploitable uses of these drugs. I *have* drank, smoked pot, did X, have been on vicodin among other painkillers. I have never abused drugs, they were either used in medicinal ways or recreationaly and responsibly.
I am not saying I haven't made mistakes.. and gone overboard.. but I don't make it a habit most of which was done in ignorant youth.. and don't want to teach my kids to habitually go overboard. I will not tell my kids "don't experiement." I will however request that they are responsible about it.. research the drugs, it's effects, the risks, and of course realize the legal ramifications of their actions. Drugs do make you feel good, but you need to know what the drug does, how it does it, and uses it is inteded to have.
If you are taking a drug everyday for recreational purposes, I say find a better hobby or a different way to deal with your problems. Taking a drug to escape from reality (which really DOES SUCK) doesn't solve anything... and when you deaden your negative feelings you in turn deaden your positive feelings. Then you just become a humdrum person with little or no feeling besides getting to escape again.
Once again.. I apologize for being frank... bjkdfhasuioshuio ok Isla has returned :)
