This is Bush trying to re-instate the draft. This is not the right way to go about gathering troops for our Military. Yes I am military, so I feel that I do have some sort of say in this insane idea

The draft is the dumbest idea anyone could come up with. Forcing someone to fight when they don't want to is the fastest way to lose alot of troops....alot of the nay-sayers would end up hiding in their foxholes while all the ones that wanna be there will be out getting killed from not having the backup they would expect from anyone else...

I personally don't believe the draft could ever be brought in to effect. This generation of people is too rebelious, we all have too much of a mouth. Some of us can do military life, some can't. I'd be in Canada if it weren't for the agreement that was signed. I can't be drafted (medical history, couldn't join the military period), so I'm not worried about it for myself, but I think it will put this country in ruins, depending on how large of a draft. Shit, there's still thousands of people a day going and getting recruited for this war, what the hell do we need a draft for anyway? We've had the biggest military recruitment spike in decades due to this war, putting people who don't want to be there, there, is a bad bad idea.

Also, Donald Rumsfeld himself said last year (in January of 2003, yeah, a while ago, but still) that we were not going to need a draft. We'll see how that pans out, but I still don't think it will happen.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters this month he sees no need for a draft. He said the military is managing to attract enough skilled recruits without one.

"We're not going to re-implement a draft. There is no need for it at all," Rumsfeld said. "The disadvantages of using compulsion to bring into the armed forces the men and women needed are notable."

I also agree. A country founded on freedome, forcing its citizens to go off and fight half way across the world should be considered unconstitutional.

funny you should say that, because this country was also founded through a strong military and a war.

Most of our early wars were fought here on our own land (well, it wasn't ours to begin with, but thats beside the point). We didn't start goin out and fighting on other peoples land until (relatively) lately. The past century is filled with wars we started or had an interest in the outcome of. We've put so many leaders into power, and then taken them back out again, it's very much a government conspiracy to control as many other governments as we can.

Its an interesting topic.

From what I understand, the Bush administration was considering reinstituting when they took office, and even restructured a few of the agencies invovled, pumping a few million into them, but abandoned that plan when public opinion started moving against the administration for other reasons. They'll stay away from this topic till after elections. If we have a draft, it'll be because we re-elect the neoconservatives.

And thats just it--we're the kinda people who would re-elect Bush simply because most of us don't put two and two together, and when someone does it for us, they say its five, and we say "ok." We wouldn't fight a draft--at least not effectively. The idea of democracy requires the people to run their country, but we sit back and play mud. Those who vote have become polarized and refuse to listen to anything but their own opinion. Who wants to debate with someone who wnot change their opinion for any reason? Thats just shouting across the room, which, incidently, is what you see on c-span these days. The voices become shriller and shriller and the party with the most power always wins a fight without a debate.

Would it really be such a bad thing, though? Probably. A draft isn't an unconstitutional thing--any country that isn't able to protect its people will fall, always and unconditionally--but like Mr. Black was saying, we've had the draft during these wars of existence without complaint. The neoconservatives would argue that the war in Iraq was a war of existence, though, and in fact, they did argue that point. They told Congress that it was fight or see nukes (or worse) in our cities.

Basically, the idea of a draft without imminent danger isn't very democratic, but this isn't a very democratic country any longer. I don't blame Bush, Ashcroft and their ilk for that, because they would never have gotten into power in a democratic nation.

Its really our fault, as voters, or uneducated voters. Why do we have only two parties? Aren't they more than two viewpoints? What population would allow their judicial branch to appoint the head of the executive branch? Even Pakistan was laughing at us for that one. If we really care about what happens to us, personally, we need to start thinking and speaking for ourselves, get up before they tell us to report for duty.

Edit: sorry thats so long, but school is out and I'm still in essay-mode.

Damn, I was starting to get into that too...shoulda kept it longer ;)

You do have a good point, that this country no longer thinks for itself. The government has been slowly, over the past few decades, been chiseling down our critical thinking abilities. The public schools don't teach how to think, they teach how to listen, obey, take what your told for truth. Don't question it, because whatever they tell you is correct.

I've been tellin ppl for a while now..this isn't JUST a 2-party system, there are other parties to vote for. But, nobody will. Why is that? Are the two that are in there just the only ones rich enough to plaster themselves all over the tv and radio? Does nobody know theres other parties? Hell, we even have a communist party, a nazi party, and a green party. Fuck voting Dem/Rep..lets try something NEW!!
