hey there,

i'm heading off to university next year and i'm looking at different notebooks. i've become particularly fond of the concept of the tablet pc, but i'm not sure if the lack of decent processing speed is worth it. the model that i've been looking at the most is the M1400, from motioncomputing.com. If any one has any feelings on tablets, let me know...thanks a ton!

I've never used a tablet PC, but it really depends on your needs. Personally, I say just get a laptop or even desktop but I guess it depends on the reason you want a tablet pc

I agree with Aragon. If your going to use it mainly for storing notes and such thats fine. But i still would personally go with a notebook. More power,there becomming more and more compact and best of all: There becomming more reasonably priced.

I wouldn't buy a tablet notebook over a 'regular' notebook unless there was something that the tablet could do that I absolutely *needed* as opposed to wanted (as in wanting the coolness factor or the ability to doodle), or the tablet configuration was going to massively increase ease of use or speed of getting things done, which it won't unless you do a lot of art. Even then, I would think you'd want regular access to the keys anyways.



For me it would mainly come down to is the coolness factor of a tablet worth the performance hit - probably not.

but is the performance hit truly that much worse? i can still get .5-2gigs of mem, intel celeron 1.1ghz (but from what i've heard about celeron is that wouldn't be at all slower than than the P4 3.2ghz), cd-rw/dvd, hardtop keyboard, 12" display, 20-60gig harddrive...i'm not sure what it's lacking. But- perhaps i've misunderstood what i've heard about the celeron. Would that 1.1ghz celeron be significantly slower than the 3.2gig P4? (right now i'm running a p3...so a gig would be faster regardless than what i have now)...thanks though!

i say get a pocketpc (for portability) and a desktop (for functionality)



you do this and you'll pay 1/2 what it costs for a tablet or laptop.



pocketpc's now with windows mobile 2003 can do anything as far as notetaking that a tablet pc can do (except run a mouse via usb)



i mean think about it, you can put together a badass PC with near top of the line gfx and proc for maybve $700 (if you make it), and get a really good ppc with wm2k3 for about $300 (Axim X30 with 624 MHz & Integrated Wireless, with coupons), so there ya have $1000 for that. you could get comparable laptop for $2000, or that centrino one from motioncomputing.com was at least $2000. so you pay half as much and have the same functionality.
