Okay, I read the room linking post, but I would like to do something a little more complicated, but for the same purpose. And this is something that I have seen done, and I thought it was pretty cool.
What I want to do is setup a teleporting system that works much like the a vortex. Lets say I want a portal at the blue tower. I want that portal to spit me out in a room I created called Testing Room. This room is Map 19 Room 1, and I created it as a copy of the bank, so that it would be a safe room as well. So, it has the following attributes:
-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-
Shop #8
Max Regen 5
Deley 5
Control Room 1
Monster Type LAIR
Room Type NORMAL
Ansi Map WCCMAP01.ANS
And everything else is set to 0
-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-
Okay. So this would make Test Room a safe room, right? I don't know because I still can not get to my Test Room, so I have tried to just make a normal exit so that I can get to it. So, lets take a look at the exits tab:
-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-
Test Room
-----------
East = (Room #) 2327 (Exit Type) Map Change (Map #) 1
Blue Tower
-----------
West = (Room #) 1 (Exit Type) Map Change (Map #) 19
-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-
So... I compiled my update file, and instead of just copying in the WCCUPDA2.DAT file, I copied over all of the dats, because with some edits, this is the only way that they will stick.
Alrighty! It worked. So now I can get to my Test Room, and I am adding other exits. I haven't tested it to see if it is a safe room or not, but I think it should be.
So now back to my question, what do I have to do to make this a look a little more realistic with a nifty portal? Would I just edit in a new message and set it up like a go path kinda thingee? I guess I will play around with it a lil, but any comments/advise would be wonderful!
Thanks~

Re: Room Linking... Advanced
So I linked up my test room with HOD, Rhudar, Khaz, Lost City, ect... and all my exits are functional according to the map editor with Nitemare. So I compiled a new update file, copied everything over again, and it all works, except for my exit to the HOD. In the HOD, there is no exit to the sw, and when I move ne in my test room, my server crashes and I get the attempt to read from 0 error message.
:rant:
Any ideas why?
FYI: All the other exits from my test room are working fine, and the exits from the room they are linked with and the test room are working as well. I am running O, and supposedly i should be able to have extra maps, races, classes, the whole deal... Also all of my mods are enabled, and I have been running my server locally for about 3 weeks, with NO crashes what-so-ever to date.
Nevermind... I fixed it... I was pointing to the wrong HOD... :rolleyes:

Re: Room Linking... Advanced
Okay... Uhm everything was working fine, but because I respect what you have to say about this kinda stuff, I have changed everything. My test room is now Map 1, Room 5000, and it is linked up to rooms all around the realm. So, back to my original question again. How would i make the exits work like the vortex? Like you say "go portal" or something when you are at HOD, and you end up in my test room, but then you say like "go silvermere" in my test room, and it takes you back to HOD. Or "go Rhudar", and it takes you to Rhudar. Ect. I think you guys get the point. Would that be a Text Exit Type, and I just make new messages to get me where I am going, or is it something else. I took a look at the darkwood forest vortex, and nothing obvious is popping out at me.

map 18+ is bugged in a few ways (the dll technicly doesn't allow it all but people have tried to patch it). look at the room command (bottom left of the general tab in the advanced settings) for the vortexes. then look at the textblock commands, it is pretty self explanitory. you could do it that way or you could use text commands like you said and make it like the "go path" and "go crack" exits.

Re: Room Linking... Advanced
But then again, if I wanted to do it with the text commands, I would have to make all of my rooms on map 1, the same as my test room, right? Anyways, thanks for your help!

Re: Room Linking... Advanced
Alright, so I did the textblocks, and it all works pretty well, but I have one last question. I made a new item called Dark Rift #2048, used the whirling vortex as a template, and put it in the placed items in several rooms using nitemare. I compiled an update, copied over my old DATs, and let the update run all the way through, and my Dark Rift is still not in Khaz, or my Test room. What did I do wrong?

Re: Room Linking... Advanced
I have copied my DATs to a seperate directory, which is where I have Nitemare pointing. However, I have noticed that in the case of some edits, i.e. rooms, it works best if I take down my BBS, copy the DATs from my BBS directory to the directory Nitemare is pointing to, do my edits, compile an update, and then copy the DATs back into my BBS directory, hence overrighting the originals with the newly edited DATs. I have found that some edits I do are not even effective unless I do them this way. However in most cases, I just do my edits where Nitemare is pointed, compile an update, and copy the update into my BBS directory and run the Apply an Update selection from the SYSOP menu, which I believe was the most reccomended suggestion.
Yes, I have tried reloading WG, and no, the item isn't limited. It is exactly the same as whirling vortex, except with a new name and description. Sometimes it is in the rooms, and sometimes it is not. I was thinking that maybe it is some kind of problem with my buffer settings? I have tried tweaking the buffer settings, but it seems to have made the problem more random, for example, now a dark rift has appeared in Khaz, but there isn't one at Lost City. When I first went to tweak the buffers, they were mostly set below the default level. I raised them back up to default, and that is where I am at right now.
