The Archer class has been a long-time favorite among lots of edited realms I've noticed. I always use it in my realms. They usually are completely pointless, or extremely overpowered. Well I designed a new way for Archer's to become a creative, exciting, and diverse class. Heres how:
1. Make Archers 1-hand Sharp. Give them the options to use a sword if they choose. Make sure the Bow's have benefits over swords, so the bows arent pointless. Give Archer's the armour of your choosing, and even magic If you choose (I recomend Druid-1 of course) and adjust your exp table.
2. Make all Bows off-hand items. The bows will become off-hand, just like in real life. They will regulate the accuracy levels of Archers. They can also be modified to control MaxDmg, Crits, and BsDmg.
3. Make a series of Arrows. Arrows will be a 1-hand sharp Archer-only weapon. (Equipped in Weapon-Hand) I base my arrows damage on the level restriction of the arrow. There is plenty of different ways you can do your damage, But I have the bows regulate the Damage, coupled with the arrows.
My arrows usually go from 1-1 damage (lvl 10), to 10-10 damage(lvl 50)... While a level 10 bow will add +20 Max Dmg, and a level 50 bow will add +40 Max Dmg. You will have to play with it to find a balance that fits your realm.
-Effects- The cool part about the arrows being the weapons, is you can add end-spell effects to them. You can make lightning arrows, elemental arrows, draining arrows, disease arrows, etc, etc...
4. Quiver. This is optional. Possibly a (worn) item that adds some Encumberence. It will help when you are carrying a variety of arrows.
I have found that basing an Archer with these properties makes them ALOT more diverse and interesting to play. You can mix and match combinations, as well as use shortsword. Prior - I had Archers "Limited/Staffs" and all the bows were 'Archer only'... It made for a small weapon selection and not alot of gameplay for an Archer. I hope this will liven up your Archer classes as well as your Realms! I gotta try to help out when I can, Ya'know!

Not bad ideas... Still, archers are pretty goofy in mmud... since they arent really ranged... i like how metro gave bows +dodge... at least some gears were turning over there...

Or.... like a meteor swarm type arrow... an arrow that you shoot into the air and explodes and has a type of spell effect :) that would look pretty nice.. hehe

LOL..that's funny, Cercio and I were talking about the same EXACT thing this morning on my mud. Needless to say, it's a good idea.

Re: Archer class.
Wow.. Thanks Plat ;) Means alot coming from you, Ya know.. Anyways - One thing I found out while making this design is you CANT have them be 1-h Sharp, it would be nice, But you can wear a sword, then an off-hand bow, and it doubles up the +max dmg into insane values.. You have to restrict them and give them bows only. They will be able to punch extremely hard with no arrow equiped and a bow in the off-hand, BUT just make the arrows regulate the 'Magic' Value, and youve got yourself a completely new style of combatant.. Enjoy!

Re: Archer class.
Pretty clever.
However, there's a lot of classes in mud as is, and this would just end up mimicing another one with just different names for equipment. The fact that you're in the same room as a melee class, doesn't help either. And giving high dodge values would be unbalancing in hand-to-hand combat, in which archers should get owned. So, a lot of limitations to work around, and it doesn't help that majormud doesn't really recognize any ranged combat. But it's a different idea that needs to be fully explored before completely dismissing it.
I'll let you know if I get any ideas.

Re: Archer class.
i most like the bow/arrow system in rose: council of guardians. i like how you can fire into the next room and it will hit someone. but of course, monsters can do that as well... and you can also cast spells into the next room, like fireball that hits the whole room. it's probably a lot of work to make somethin like that work for majormud now tho
Re: Archer class.
yeah, Rose:COG's combat system was a lot more fun than majormud's... between the variable swing timers and the inter-room bow attacks, ROSE ROCKED!!! too bad its popularity died after stupid metro fired both its original coder and developer..:(

One problem with that archer system. If you make bows off hand and limit archers to 1-h sharp, they can wear something like a laen longsword and the bow and get +40 damage. Its better to either make damage for the arrows or limit archers to staff only :) just a thought :arghh:
