self-rebooting POS [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by dxpac666 »

Here's the deal. I left work work yesterday, and according to one of my users, the board went down 12 minutes after I left. I came home to find my computer chillin with the screen saver on. I'm like wtf, I shut the screen saver off, why is it on? I move my mouse, and I'm at the windows login screen. so I put in my password, and it reboots. I try again, its frozen. I try again, I finally get in, I try to shut down some things that automatically load, and it reboots. I try again in safe mode, it freezes. I try yet again, in safe mode, and it works. I try to get on AIM, and it reboots. I walk away for a couple minutes, and when I come back I smell smoke, and the smell is strongest by the computer. So I shut it off, unplugged it, took the case off, and got all the dust out. Put it back together, hook it up, turn it on... now nothing will even show up on the monitor. So... any ideas?

I know those symptoms,i spent close to 700$ trying to fix the issue and i found out what was causing it. This will sound silly but it worked for me.....Replace your network card. If you have a spare try it out. I has a Linksys LNE100TX V4 card and it rebooted windows constantly. I replaced the motherboard, processor, ram,PSU, HD and everything till i finally swapped out the NIC and that worked.

check to make sure your floppy drive power cable is on correctly. it's got the 4 pins for power and if you have it aligned wrong (like only plugged onto 3 of them) then it wont boot. disconnect the floppy completely to be sure (power and cable). also, the rebooting problem may be the msblast worm that went around. that's what it did, made your pc reboot randomly.
