Sca

Post by Hobo_Bill »

Anyone here on MMB know of the SCA, or maybe even a member? It's a part of my life that I enjoy immensely, gets me away from real life for awhile every month or 2. For those of you who don't know what the SCA is, it's the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group that recreates and re-enacts the renaissance period or earlier, 1600 A.D. and on till about 1700. Basically at events, called Wars, your group camps at a war site with about 300-500 other people, there are daily events such as archery, massive battles in which you beat each other with weapons. And the parties are world class. This weekend we had about half of the whole war-site at my group's camp, a table full of alcohol, and clothes being discarded left and right. If you're into the Renaissance Faire or anything like it, or would like to get into it, I'd highly recommend it.

That sounds wild, I've never heard of anything like that in Florida. Is it a roaming/touring type thing, or mainly just your area? (My attic, hehe)

There are events all over the place, AZ, NV, CA, wherever.. I'm sure there is something like it in your area, Gami. It's a little more hardcore than the faire, as the faire in my area is a commercial bitch now. That's cool drcorey, do you attend regularly? I imagine my group (Darksail) will be traveling to CAID. We take part in 6-8 events annually. This last weekend was Darkwell XV - a 2 day event (weekend) basically just to party. We have our leper colony go out and "spread the love", then our annual Ugly Toga Party.. At normal events, those that aren't just a weekend, we are a band of gnarly pirates.. YARR!! I'm fairly new to the SCA, but I've been involved with things like it for quite awhile. But again, if you're into this kind of thing, definitely get involved. You can visit the Darksail website to check us out at http://www.geocities.com/LaVillaABroka/

Oh and as far as blacksmithing goes, we have a bi-monthly (sorta) forge session where we make armor, weapons, banners, crests, whatever. We recently made a 4 lb brass cross for our resident Priest, Father Drake (who also is our master brewer :P). There are a couple of us who also make chainmail and other chain items, I make jewelry (haven't in awhile, but getting back into it). There's something for everyone..

Chainmail... what a fine art next to making platemail.... I currently make chainmail, almost have a complete suit of stainless chainmail done!! :) Next on my list is platemail. I can get aircraft aluminum... so I think I am going to use that stuff for making it. I go for functionality and looks..... not too authentic... but I also don't want all my hard work going down in rust 10 years from now.

hehe, good idea, plus it'll be much lighter. I wore a set of platemail this weekend, MINIMAL platemail, must've weighed at least 150 lbs.. And in 115 degree sunny fucking weather, that's a bitch and a half.. I wore it for 20 minutes before I had to tear it off (as fast as possible, considering) and go soak in a puddle.. I plan on doing fighting heavies tho, so I'll have to get used to it..

There is one every year in St. Pete (Renaissance Festival) and I believe they have a couple a year in Jax or so.
