Ram [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by MrBlack »

Anyone know how to tell the type of RAM? I have about 6 32M chips and 4 64M chips, but the technicians didn't know what type, saying they were either 133 or 100...does it matter if they were combined or what?

Well, if a PC takes either 100 or 133 it should run them both. The pc that takes the pc133 will only run the pc100 at 100mhz obviously and the pc that acceps the pc100 should take the pc133, but only run it at 100mhz

all true. only thing is, i don't think you can mix and match speeds. i'm also not sure if a pc100 machine will take pc133 ram. a pc133 machine would recognize the older hardware and run it at the speed it was set, but i dont know if older hardware could recognize newer hardware and only run it at the slower speed.

Ok, but that still doesn't tell me how to tell the two apart ;)

if it doesn't have a sticker, yer pretty screwed besides looking at the markings on the chip --which are usually pretty cryptic. i haven't looked at dimm markings in awhile cause they usually always have stickers, but simms often told the speed by a "-60" or "60ns", "70ns", etc. the only other way would be to pop in it a memory tester and they cost mad cash. maybe search for portions of the number markings on the net.

You can run PC133 on a PC100 based mobo,it just downclocks it, something like that (age wise) i would suspect was probably PC66 tho. (IMHO)

:wstupid: just thought I'd add this in, since it seemed to be Aragorn's standard reply for this thread
