I am in the process of writing a stand alone MUD. It will be completely editable by the sysops, making every game different.

It is similar to commands in MajorMUD.

Currently, it accepts telnet connections.

Don't know if i'll ever finish it...i just keep an adding and adding to it, hard to make a cut off line.

gee, sounds just like the mud engine I have now.

with mine you can build from inside while it's running, or outside too.

plus using a standard world format, you can import other world and areas.

Nice...Currently, you can't edit the world while its running completely, just basic things...

And I am working on a world combiner/ copier that will allow 2 different systems to combine there worlds without too many problems...

I also have somewhat of a scripting launguage type thingy going on where the sysop can do some nifty custom things.

Mine is currently very playable, its just needs some big beta testing (which i hope to get out in the next couple months) to find the big bugs, and a couple little things i want in before the release.

Heres a screen shot (in crappy JPEG format).

Would be nice to here more about yours.

well, like my first message, the main game server is based on Smaug by

various authors. I picked smaug because the file format is widely used.

I tryed one with a gui console but found it to be a memory hog, so mine

runs as a win32 service. I would like to redo the interface to look like

majormud. you can see it at: telnet://tsgc.dyndns.org:4444

mostly I am just fixing bugs and other things now. I just put colors into

it. the stock code was mono. take a look at mine and see if you want to

work together. I can give you my code because it still is under the smaug license and will be untill I make enoght changes to spawn off my own version.

whoa, that's pretty cool spike... did you code that from scratch? or is it a mod of an existing codebase?

any BBS support, or is it just a stand-alone telnet?

MajorMud was a very odd beast when I encountered it. I first started mudding on DIKU based muds, where the idea of scripting is pretty much universally loathed. When I found out how much of MMud is scripting I immediately quit, and didn't play again for like 3 years, cause scripting is one of the lamest ideas I've ever found... Then started playing on a no-script board and found it to be a fun game.

don't forget to avoid copyright violations, that could shut the whole project down. There isn't a whole lot in major mud that can be copyrighted since a majority of it is taken from other people, but just be safe. I'd hate to see a good project like this get squashed for oversights.

Agreed. I never really understood the purpose of scripting -- or rather, why anyone would want to make a MUD designed for scripting. Why make a game that is designed to be played by a script? Why participate in a game that requires you leave your computer on and connected all the time, in order to be a competitive force in the game? From a sysop's perspective, why run a game that wastes tons of bandwidth by having all those scripts online 24/7? For users on pay BBS's -- why pay money to have your computer play a game for you?

If a game is so boring that it requires a scripting program to be worthwhile, what does that say about the quality of the game?

It seems to me that a better approach would be to design a game for PEOPLE to play; make the game fun/interesting enough that people don't NEED to script; furthermore, put things in the game that make it IMPOSSIBLE to script anyway. Then you can make the game fast-paced without having to worry about people "cheating" with scripts.

Sorry for posting a nonscripter manifesto, but the whole scripting thing just never clicked for me...

it's the reason they can sell it for so much money, because people pay for play, pay by the month, or in ye olde times, by the hour.

personally evan, i like doormud because it doesn't take a long time to get high level and to beat everything in the game. of actual game playing time, i'd say it took me less than 24 hours (which of course was about 20 days) to beat everything in the game. personally, i like that. it IS a door game (as implied by the name DoorMUD, lol) so similar to T-LORD and others of the sort, it shouldn't take a metric year on a "stock" game

if majormud were like DoorMUD in the time aspect, however, it wouldn't have lasted this long. IMHO it was a good move for them to make it a "script required" game. and for the very reason you said, "[To] participate in a game that requires you leave your computer on and connected all the time, in order to be a competitive force in the game." Time is money, especially when money is charged for time :P

diku-mud has endured at least as long as MMud, and it is definately not a scripting game... and some of the larger diku-based games have been up for over 10 years now.
