Mudding from work... :P [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by Hobo_Bill »

Ok, I know alot of folks mud from work, and I just wanted to know if there was any way for the big boss man to see what proggies are open through the network connection. I've got megamud minimized into the task-bar, so it doesn't show up on XP as a running program, it's "behind-the-scenes" I guess. But I wanna make sure if they notice a constantly running connection to somewhere that I still have a job! ;)

uhm YEAH! more then likely the big boss is dumber then you, However the guys in the IT department can pull up every web page or e-mail you look at if they want too. They can see what is running on your computer and with a fe simple commands either open some programs up on your machine or lock them down. Behold the powers of IT!

If they want to look, they will find megamud, easily. Every computer usually has a constant connection going out, so they probably won't notice. I don't mud from work just for that reason though, just in case. Mud's not worth my job, or a lecture.

Lucky for me we don't have an IT dept.. In fact, when we get one it'll be me (scary that I know more than anyone here, but I still have to ask these kind of questions..) I've been getting a lil nervous, and yer right, it's not worth my job, so I wanted to see exactly how they could find out. I'm fairly irreplacable here, so I doubt I'd lose my job, but.... ;P Thx.

they can sniff packets and find out your connected to the bbs ip.. then with analysis they can extract your text and the bbs text that passes through (since it's all unencrypted)... now if megamud supported SSH, you can ssh to a server and telnet out from there. Anything between your connection and the server looks like a legit connection. And you can just say you are ssh'ing to your home computer because you are a nerd and they won't think much about it (because you probably are :-p)

P.S. a program called "Watchcat" can take megamud off of your task bar and out of your sytem tray ;) You hide programs and access it using special key sequences you define. Search for it on download.com

It's simple to get around really. You can set up a SSH tunnel to your home PC, and use the port forwarding functionality of SSH to forward the packets through your home PC to the MUD server. The packets can't be sniffed because they are encrypted via the SSH tunnel, and also the only connection they will see is you connecting to your home PC.

Yes... the security guys get to have all the FUN.

Don't forget that IT-level access allows for someone to see what processes are running on your machine - which means they could see megamud.exe by monitoring your task manager.
