How do I apply an update to MUD from NMR? [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by BaBar »

It's been a long time since I've used NMR, but the way I remember it is I make my changes in NMR to the copy of .dats I have stored for NMR use, and I then copy and paste the wccupda2.dat that NMR compiles into my worldgroup folder, boot up Worldgroup, wait a couple minutes for the changes to take affect, and that should be it..right?

Well, I've been doing that and my changes aren't going into affect. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I was first using 1.11m .dats, and I thought that it might be because of 1.11m and NMR doesn't yet support 1.11m.........so I then started over with 1.11i+patch (didn't bother to download j,k, or l when it was out) and it still didn't work.

Let me know how I can make this work.

You have to wait for it to completely update..

Majormud Notice - Automatic Database Update Complete

Then your changes will be in.

like war hawk says... it's not going to do you any good if your updated dats can't even be read... copy those over too.

I was finally able to get it to take. I'm not sure if the problem had anything to do with not copying all the .dats, but I know that most of the problem had to do with me not waiting for mud to initialize all the way and have the changes take effect. It was taking SOO long for my board to initialize all the way (I stopped waiting after 30 minutes), that I went in and changed the initialization time to 20000 and restarted and everything went much faster and the changes took effect.

Here's another question:

I have 1.11m .dats, can I use the most current copy of NMR to edit those .dats? I was wondering since in the settings you can only go up to version 1.11l, and when I select 1.11l (with my 1.11m .dats) it says something about not the right .dats, possible file corruption, yada yada. But, if I select any of the other versions it doesn't give me that message. I haven't tried to do it yet, but was just wondering what the effect would be.

Thanks,

BaBar, do me a favor and IM me: syntx53

about the dats, you actually don't wanna copy *.dat over every time because then things like shop stock and monster item drops wont be correct (if a monster is killed and its items drop and you overwrite that file the next day, it's like the monster never dropped them). copying your wccupdate2.dat over after compiling is the way to go.

if you log someone in and just sit them in the halls of the dead it makes it go much faster too. and yes, you need to wait for "automatic database update complete" to know the update file has finished. also a final note, remember that your changes to monsters and such may not take effect until the straglers that were already in the game are killed.

as for v1.11m compatibility, i haven't received a demo of version M yet.

ya'll think I'm crazy but I'm telling you... edit the dats while the board is running... everything is up to date... instead of copying stuff over and messing up rooms/shops/monsters etc. the worst problem I've ever had is NMR might screw up next time I open it if there hasn't been a cleanup in between uses. the game itself never gets screwed up.

I've done this also. It worked well for a long time, then one day things got all mixed up. Monsters started swinging with entrance/exit messages, or regen in odd places. It's a chance every time you do it that something will go seriously wrong. Why risk it? User's don't like downtime. People will get ticked off if you go down once a day for errors in your dats.

editing your dats while the board is running can (not saying it definately will) cause corruption. if mud and you go to write to a record at the same time, OR if mud went to write a value and then you wrote over it before it went to read it again, OR if mud went to read one of the quickrefernces it creates for monsters/items/spells/etc and then all of a sudden it isn't there anymore or different than how it initially read it, OR any number of other things I could sit here and write about could cause corruption and/or crashes.
