College Vs. Certs Vs. Experience [Archive] - ForumsHQ

I realize that Experience is always a plus and will most of the time, get you a higher salary/hourly wage.



College education = 2/4 yr degree

Certifications = MSCE, A+ ect.





Should I...??



Get my 4 year degree, along with certifications, or just get my certs?



I might be able to get help from the state...I am going to quit my night job...Erin is looking for a job. I could study for the certs on my own..or go to college for those alone.



I have all the resources I need for A+ and MCP, I have 1 book for the MCSE. I know SOMEONE keeps telling me to do another OS..but I haven't even ever used it before...



Maybe just go to college to get my 4yr degree, and study for the certs on my own? Devry has a 4 yr degree that along the way you can get certs...

Degree + certs, get yerself a computer job in college so when you graduate you have degree+cert+4 years experience.. you will be set. btw A+ doesn't get you anywhere.. mcse even if you keep it current won't get you anywhere w/out a degree.

Go to a college like Westwood college.

When youre done you get a degree and your also cisco certified.

Theres alot of colleges now that offer networking certification such as ITTech or even devry or whatever.



Certs will never stand up again a person with a degree and certs

Should I just study and try to get my MCP? I can prob get a job with that for around $9-$10/hr...I know a local hospital pays $13/hr..but I didn't/dont have the cert when the job opened up.



Then I can have job paying alright, and find a college for nights or mornings..depending on what shift I work.

Dont believe that getting just a cert to start off will enable you to get a entry level computer job for even $9 or 10 an hr.

Its all about the experience right now

A+ and MCP will get you a job as a level 1 tech support for some ISP. Although they'll also hire people who have never even seen a computer for the same job, so those two are worth about as little as the paper they're printed on. MCP is only two tests and really doesn't mean you know much more than the average user. I took the first part of the MCP test and missed 1 question...960 I think was my score or so...irrelevant. Go get your Bachelor's in Comp Sci, try and get internships while working through school and get certs to back up your education. Certs alone won't get you anything. If you can't even set up a simple 50-node network w/ an MCSE, you're pretty much useless. Too many paper MCSE's out there now, the tests are pretty simple.
