Megapud
Re: Megapud
Nod..that is, IF Locke actually does his program. Last I talked to him about it he sed he wasn't working on it very much, but was none-the-less..I wonder how much progress he's had.

Hell, he could simply export the databases with nightmare and then import them straight into Megapud, if he had a decent importing function. It wouldn't even take that long to write one if he didn't. That bastard needs to get off his ass cause he's got competition coming now.
Compeitition? From who? Everyone who has any thoughts of paying for megamud already has. That or they crack it. Where else is he ever going to make a profit? He isn't.

time is money...

You can still buy licenses for Megamud. The game has not reached an invisible user barrier, there are new users to the game every month. I guarantee he gets between one to three orders a month.
His competition will come from Locke, read above.

Re: Megapud
Time is money? Programming something in your spare time, when YOU feel like doing it? No..not at all. That time isn't money, that time is pleasure. If you like to do something, do it. If you don't, sell/give the source code up and don't. It's simple as that...you don't see Syntax charging us for NMR when he spends a shitload of time on it do you? He spends that time for US, he doesn't have a BBS up..he's helping us out - for free. So is War Hawk..his site is awesome, it took him time to do it..spare time. The time they speant coding these things wasn't time that otherwise would have been spent washing cars or mowing lawns for extra cash..therefore the time doesn't = money.
Like I said.. I can understand him charging for it..and I would have bought it if the price was reasonable, but it isn't.
And yes, he has competition from Locke (if Locke is even working on one still).

Re: Megapud
You program things for mud in your spare time for pleasure, experience and for yourself and others to use. You've got to be a truly altruistic person in this.. you can't do it for profit. If anything, it's pocket money on the side. If someone is looking for profit here(looks like Merlin was).. they're in the wrong f*cking business!

Then he's in the wrong f*cking field! :D I don't see how one could expect make money on a text based game application with the target consumer base being hackers or wannabe's, mostly under 25, w/o a credit card and too broke to shell out 45bucks anyway.

Thanks :) Yeah, I do it for fun and not profit. But I still have to charge a little bit due to the time commitment involved. Registrations also definitely help w/ staying motivated too.
When I'm out of college and have a decent-paying programming job (hopefully in 2-3 years), I'll definitely consider making my BBS games freeware. Until then tho, the lil bit of extra spending cash I get from registrations is definitely put to good use :D

Rust... He made mad money. A shitload of money. I know four people who purchased the product, even though I had the keygen for them at the time. If he sold 1000 licences, he made $45k. That's one hell of a year for doing something in your spare time.
