what do people want... [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by zan »

I recently started playing doormud on morbid and its fantastic. However I would like to see more monster fights so that we can play longer each day to make it a better game. By the time I really get into the game I have to stop because of lack of monster fights.

I think the game would be more popular if more fights were added. If there were monster fights in majormud im sure alot less people would play it.

If anyone agrees with me or disagrees post here. Maybe if we all team up we can change that one rule.

i don't agree with it. i've played on doormud with a lot of MF and it's like if you don't be at keys for 4 hours a day and use all of those fights, you get left behind.... at 35 MF there is more tactic involved, fighting the right monsters, ensuring you don't die. because lets be serious, the sole purpose of dying isn't that you lose all of your stuff, it's so that your MF are reduced... but what is 17 lost MF when you have 1000? it's nothin.

either that or someone gets to level 20 or whatever in 1 day and bam they're bored with the game. i say that it stays how it is, 35 daily, 100 max. it gives ya a routine to do every morning for 20 mins or so.... or for me if you're under level 12, for 6 hours :P

I see your point, well taken, but when your at work for 8 long boring hours its fun to be pounding away at the keys, it makes the managers think your actually doing something :D How do you go about getting 100 MF points? That would be good cause your fingers are bound to get tired at one point. Do you gain more points as you level into higher levels?

nod. I agree wholly. Both Ray and I have been there. While at first, more fights would seem better, you inevidibly get a couple people who will rise to lvl 20 while you sit around at lvl 5, trying to figure out how to get past the green dragon with your warrior. 35 isn't too bad really, you can use it in a managable amount of time. Unless you wanna spend half your day typing n/e/s/w and "a ", then where it is right now is just about right. Not too much, not too little. I've been on one board where they only had 20 a day. That sucked. Heh. Took forever to get anywhere. A week to get 100 MF just wasn't worth the effort. :)

The whole Monster Fight thing has been debated a lot by many players, and has been a major complaint by a fair number of people, but hopefully I can explain the logic here...

DoorMUD is designed entirely to be hand-played. If you've played MajorMud on a non-edited, non-scripting board, the main problem is that the 1st place player is always whoever has the most free time (or is willing to devote the most time)... So the main point of the DoorMUD monster fight system is to prevent that from happening (and also to prevent scripting from being effective, but that's another matter).

Of course, it's sysop configurable (up to a max of 1000 fights, which is about 9 hrs of gameplay), but at higher MF settings players tend to zoom through the game extremely quickly so it ruins the fun. There is an option in DoorMUD Professional that allows sysops to raise exp tables to compensate; this way a sysop can put a game on much more fights and keep the leveling on pace correctly. So many board with DMUD Pro have 1 copy using default settings, and another copy w/ higher exp tables and higher daily fights.

To answer zan's question, you don't get extra daily MFs at higher levels... but the rate of leveling doesn't slow down a whole lot like in other MUDs. So you still level quickly at high levels, even w/ only 35 fights per day. (Altho, I should note, it is possible with the Editor to create items that raise daily fights, altho no stock items currently use this ability)

Also since unused monster fights accumulate (up to whatever max the sysop set, default of 100), some players take the approach of only playing once every 3 days... that way when they do play, they can play for a much longer period of time at once.

Hopefully that makes sense :)

Well, MFs lost on death is actually somewhat proportional to the daily fights setting (it uses a goofy formula, but usually around 50% loss)... but nonetheless, having high MF settings is definitely bad for the other reasons you listed :)

Also I've seen people write their own scripts and use them on 1000 MF games... on this one bbs, there's a few level 35+ guys, and it didn't even take them very long to get that high... the game just isn't built for that, even if the sysop edits in a bunch of super-high-level areas, anywhere near that many MFs/day just tends to be bad.

If I remember correctly, it was on X-Bit BBS... but I just logged on there for the first time in like a year and it appears that they reset their doormud game 3 weeks ago, and removed the 2nd copy that had 1000 fights... ohwell, no more lvl 35 guys i guess!

they have a bunch of boards with high MF's and some say 3X exp charts but all the monsters seem to have normal exp so I think they mean 3X character exp charts (which would be lame). I still think Morbid would be better with like 60 fights a day.
