You will need to get BIOSes for that chip though? If I get the Matrix chip, I have to flash it with a Matrix BIOS? Do you actually flash the XBox BIOS, or just the mod chip BIOS?

With the newer chips you will just flash the chip, not the onboard bios.
So if I get a chip I don't have to do surgery on my XBOX, it just screws in? or?? I saw someone say something about screwing it in..and, where can I find the chip?
xbox-scene has links on where you would get a chip. Yeah the new ones are just pop the xbox open, remove one motherboard screw and put the chip in that spot and replace the screw.
*****As a warning. XboxLive can detect mod chips. I haven't checked up on the scene since it first showed up but some of the new chips may get around their security.

yes, you will need to get a bios. the matrix uses 256k bioses, so you will need one of those (or split a 1mb bios into a 256k one). and you flash the matrix, not the onboard bios.

Splitting BIOSes, you pick and choose what features you want? How do you go about doing that? All I have done with BIOSes would be flashing them(mobo, cd burner, graphics cards, router), never done a gaming console, let alone slit a BIOS.
You flash the chip BIOS from the PC?

i personally i have never used xbox live as i think the $50/yr or w/e it is can go to better places and i can play online for free with xbconnect anyway. BUT, the matrix has a built in feature where if the dip switches are a certain way you can boot it with the chip off. you boot it, turn it off, and boot it again and the chip is disabled. the older chips you can install switches on some of the wires. the new (and much better) xecuter2 has similar methods.
before anyone asks "how do you know it's off?" ... you can change the coloring of the xbox logo that comes up (which is really neat, i alternate mine between blue and purple :)) and if it comes up with your color, you know it's booting off the chip. if it's green, it's not.
