Ok, I did this same thing with my CD burner...they mass produce the same hardware, and use a different BIOS to set speed and whatnot.

That should tell you how to change your 9500 into a 9700, not sure if turns it into a 9700 Pro...good luck ;)

That only works if its on the 9700's PCB. If its on the 9500's PCB it wont work,i read extensively into it,see this link: http://www.hardforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=549211&highlight=making+a+9500+a+9700

How can you tell if it uses the 9700 PCB?

Only the old test samples and first revision shipments came with them....AKA if you were first to recieve when they came out,your chances are ebtetr. ALSO they need to have the 256 RAMDAC bus to work, if im not mistaken.
