It's a picture of the Earth taken from the Space Station last November on a perfect night with no obscuring atmospheric conditions. It's a night photo, with the lights clearly indicating populated areas.
Check out how dark Canada is, except near the US border. Also note the line of vacation cities going down from Florida to South America. Moving east, to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent". Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the density of Japan.

Re: This is really cool!!!
that pic also shows how much light pollution there is in certain areas of the world...hehe. Look at the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater area of Florida...it's almost pure light! lol That's the little handle part of Florida on the west central part of the state. hehe

Re: This is really cool!!!
The picture was taken when there was no atmospheric interference at all. Obviously there's pollution and stuff everywhere, but that doesn't affect the brightness of the lights in the picture.

Re: This is really cool!!!
the amount of lights in an area dictate how much light pollution there is in that area.
Re: This is really cool!!!
