Ok here's the deal..I got a 1.1ghz 256 ram 40 gig hd pc...aside from the fact that we have to turn it on and off about 5 times before it will finally load up windows and everything else, it runs pretty god except for 1 other thing..the sound..
The sound is pretty weird, it wouldn't work normal at first, only letting out minimal sound with every volume I could find in windows maxed..so, thinking it might be the sound card, I got a new sound card and even new speakers, to be on the safe side. The ones I had were cheap ones anyway.
Well, at first, the soundcard drivers would NOT install, saying it was missing files from the Windows Millenium Edition CD. It was missing a ks.sys.coresomethingorother, and after putting in the Me CD, we KIND OF found the file..you know how nothing will show up in the left side window unless its the specified file? Well it showed up, sort of, except it was missing the ks.sys prefix..figuring it wouldn't show up unless it's the file it's looking for, because I've never had any wrong file show up in that box, I chose it and continued installation. There were 2 more files that did the same thing, but found those exactly letter/number for letter/number.
The instructions also said that the motherboard sound card had to be disabled first, and if I'm not mistaking, this is done simply by going into your sound settings and telling your computer to not use the card...correct?
Anyway, there's also another problem..a "gameport joystick" shows up in the sound drivers now too, and has a ? on it. We used the soundcard CD to figure out what it was, or install it at least (because I don't know what it is and if I delete it, it re-finds itself whenever I restart windows). After restarting windows a few times (messing with settings to try to get the soundcard to work, as after all of that it still did the same thing), yet ANOTHER gameport joystick popped up, and has a yellow ? over it.
Again, all volumes were up, everything in the audio driver folder was disabled and only the new soundcard enabled, hell we even tried different duo's..(heh)..NOTHING WORKS!!!
ANY Idea...(if the thing about the files is confusing - you know when you go to install something and it's missing a file, and it asks if you want to browse the PC for it and you click yes, a window pops up that has folders on the right side and a blank box on the left, with the name of the missing file at the top. When you click on the folder that has the file in it, the file appears in the box to the left. Make more sense?)

Re: sound.. [Archive] - ForumsHQ
when the computer boots it will say "press [key] to enter setup" or something like that. its usually f1 or delete. from there look through the options untill you find the setting for integrated sound. if theres an integrated peripherals category thats usually where it is but every company prettymuch has their own different bios so it could be anywhere in yours :) hope that helps
Re: sound.. [Archive] - ForumsHQ
nod..thanks, ima look into it soon as i get home

Disabling the onboard sound isn't a bad idea if you won't be using it but you don't HAVE to do it. And it's not ALWAYS a bios setting sometimes it's a jumper setting on the motherboard. As far as 'missing' files I'd uninstall the card then reboot and make sure there are no references to it in windows anymore then reinstall the card and try again. If it gets to a point and says it's missing a file if it will let you browse for it then try looking around on the driver cd or disk for it. I had that problem with a sound card I had. It would ask for the windows 98 CD then copy some files then get to one file and say it couldn't locate it and to stick the windows 98 CD in (which was ALREADY in). Anyhow I ended up having to browse the driver CD that came with the soundcard to find it.
