Weird text block problems [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by Atma »

Everyone says LJN works fabulously for text blocks, so I know I must be screwing something up here... *problem I'm getting is similar to what happens if you try to edit them with Nightmare. *Things are where they shouldn't be, and there's garble. *Sometimes random garble. *For instance, I greeted a guardsman. *Got about 2-3 characters of garble at the end of the message. *Greeted him again, another 2-3 characters of garble but this time completely different garble. *WTF? *That's something I've never seen even with Nightmare's text block slaughtering powers. *It's also... well... take a look:

diary:9224

voices:9226

zed bloodshot eyes, for a moment his eyes

show some clarity. "Grettings lad, I be the gravedigger for the fine town o' Silvermere,

can you hear the voices...er" he chuckles uncomfortably and goes on "...can you hear the wind blow through the trees, it

sounds like whispering voices...er" he again chuckles uncomfortably "...birds chirping sometiems...yeah."

He becomes quiet and says nothing more, his eyes glazing over.

dragon. *Speaking of which, hides of dragons can make some fine

leathers. *I've found that they not only push the limits of protection,

but also that of durability." *That said, he brushes a hair from his tunic.

* *red dragonscale whip * *red dragon tail, * * * * * 10 platinum

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *dragon fang

* *"When you have the required materials, come to me and ask for the

* *name of the piece you wish me to make, and I will get started."

That was text block 9222, which is suppose to be the gravedigger's greet text. *I never editted anything near it. *Yet we have him rambling which is suppose to be another block, and we have Kotar trying to pawn off his low quality armors. *Both of which are just half there. *And no, this file was never soiled by that version of nightmare that murdered your text blocks. *I did edit it a while back with an older version that editted blocks okay, but even in the extracted text file that LJN creates, everything looks okay. *The problem seems to be when it re-creates wcctext2.dat from ljntext.txt.

The only thing I can think of possibly causing the problem is that notepad couldn't read some of the odd characters in the ljntext.txt file, and saved them incorrectly... which lead to LJN's brain exploding upon trying to re-create wcctext2.dat and causing these problems. *If that is the problem, what are you guys using to edit and save the text file? *And if that's not it... any ideas? *

First off, I use notepad for all my editing (other than hex, of course )

Your problem, I can't seem to make any sense of either heh

Could you post everything you put into the file, perhaps you mis labeled something, forgot a period somewhere, not sure...would have to take a good look at it all...

Actually, I didn't really put anything in. Changed a few things mainly. Took the race checks off of the kai forms, changed exp on phoenix quest, that sort of thing. But I suddenly had the surge of common sense I should've had when I first found the problem... I backed up my old ljntext.txt file then deleted it, and wcctext2.dat and replaced it with a clean uneditted one. Went into LJN and remade ljntext.txt and immediately rebuilt wcctext2.dat off of it without having ever done anything to it. Still screwed up like that. I've got one halfass theory on the problem, but I'm kinda screwed if that's it. I'm on Win 2k which, as all who had it know, sucks for DOS emulation sometimes. I can't run fummud for instance. It just errors and won't even start up. I figured LJN would work okay because it seems if a program starts right, it'll work right. But maybe it's that shitty DOS emulation coming back to haunt me. Other than that, I'm at a loss...
