Just dive in and do it. :)
Use a little common sense too.
I started hexing the users file. Easiest to actually test out I suppose... To hex users, just get into mmud, and look at yourself, record your stats (Make sure you try to make your stats unique).. not like 10 torches, 10 clubs, 10 shortswords. 40 health, 40 charm, etc... If you make it unique, it will be easier to locate in the hex. Even if there are a few entries for the same hex code, you can usually guess which one it is, and if not, you should see the other hex codes (for say items if thats what you are looking up) in the near vincinity ;)
Tips:
*Always have a back up of the original files in another directory and a backup of the last working (no problems) files you edited. The latter is kind of optional, I suppose, but it'll definitely make your life easier
*Contrary to popular belief over in mudcentral's majormud censoring forums (mmcf), there is nothing wrong with hexing, itself. :cheesy:
That's all for now. I'm sure MrBlack will add more

Re: Need DLL database names [Archive] - ForumsHQ
OK, First off, NEVER EVER goto majorhex!!!!
That bastard DNA sold out to metro, hence the hexing sections being closed on his site. Majorhex used to be a good source for hexing information even tho a good portion of it was messed and using some of their hex maps ended up rapin your files...
If you need hex maps, use SOFaCY's site, they have COMPLETE ehx maps for every file, save gangs and users. THey even have a nice section on adding new entries using a btreive sql rather than nightmare/chronic ;)
Anyway, to help out gronk some more.
Hopefully you know and understand hex at least somewhat, if you don't know squat, this is going to be very hard to learn at first (This goes for anyone else reading this)
I wouldn't recommend starting with editing users, too many things can go wrong with that file. Theres too many editable offsets for one character, plus theres multiple entries per character, meaning you have to edit all each entry for it to work.
Start with races or classes, those are the smallest and easiest to edit. To start out, backup your files (copy wccclas2.dat to wccclas2.bak) then open the .dat into your hex editor. If you have one of my hex maps open, take a look at it. It is setup for just one of the classes, that way it was easier to read. Some people like to cut and paste the entire class into a blank file just so they don't have to worry abotu messing up another one while editing. This isn't required, because its a little more effort than needed, but a good idea for the beginner
When editing, make sure the converter window is open, so you can see the decimal value of the offsets as your going thru the file. Theres really not much to edit in the class file, just weapon/armr type, flags, name and various stats. the hex map will show you exactly where those are in relation to the name and such. Just don't lose count ;)
This should be enough information to help you get started. Once you have worked with the smaller files such as races and classes, you can move up to the spells and item and monsters. I wouldn't suggest the user file till you know a little more, and definately not the map file, that thing is so huge and full of crap, I haven't even finished mapping the whole file yet (prolly wont, seeing as so few people use a hex editor to edit maps nowadays). The map file is the hardest to edit, so wait till you have a little more experience in editing.
If you need anymore help, I am usually on ICQ or Yahoo or even AIM

Re: Need DLL database names [Archive] - ForumsHQ
i have another tip... don't make a god race... that's a bad idea. sure it seems cool to be able to kill the ASD at level 2 cause you have a guy with 99/9 AC and 100% dodge... but i tell ya what, the game gets really boring and you're going to regret it. after hexing to that point I (*cough*) quit mud for 7 months... my longest off-time yet! hehe.... just... don't make a god race or god class or whatever, don't over power the game cause the challenge isn't there anymore and it becomes boring.

I agree with Ray Dillyo, i made a few of my classes over powering,so now we seem to have one too many cocky mystics in the realm But, thats why i created a weapon for non spellcasters to fight back with ;)

Re: Need DLL database names [Archive] - ForumsHQ
I once did that to Druids Grove BBS. I intentionally overpowered druids while I was testing some new races/classes I created. It did get boring to be a god character (combat 35-100-200hps/lvl, etc

Re: Need DLL database names [Archive] - ForumsHQ
I'm the hexing specialist, because I am!
Heh
I have been around since before the days of #### and his lame boards. I learned from him, I learned from Covenant and Krayzie K. Actually, I taught them both some things too. I taught and learned from Havoc/XoBlAsToX and micah. I even predate MajorHex and its previous lame owners DNA and Kang.
I have been around a long time. And being the only remaining hex editor, I feel it is my sole responsibility to carry on the ancient art of hexing!
If I stopped hexing, the whole world of hexing would be set back one huge step in its evolution! Without me, there would be no hex maps. And without hex maps, everyone is back to guessing or (if they can find them) using ####'s feeble UGE files for editing. Actually, I still have the ones he made for race and classes...#### he was lame heh.
Ok, now I have just lost where I was going with that whole spiel so I think I'll leave it be heh.

Oh yeah, and of course you triple my posting rate. I don't use this forum for carrying on conversations with Aragon, I use it to post, when I wanna converse, I use AIM, ICQ or Yahoo
Re: Need DLL database names [Archive] - ForumsHQ
*lol* nice speech MrBlack, you could be a spokesman at the rate you were going on and on
