i think this is typically for people with less than 512MB video ram and less than 2GB System ram who want a less jerkier experience in Quake IV. while playing Quake IV at the stock or auto-detected settings many times you may experience slight to all-out pause hitching during gameplay. this may impact your feelings of the game or cause you get killed. allievating this problem can be done by forcing the game to precache images, textures, and more at your convienence. an example what you're in store for would be seen in doom 3's timedemo. run a timedemo demo1.demo twice in a row and you'll notice the 2nd time through it is much more fluidic. it could be said that you felt a nice gentle interpolated curve of frames over the previous run. now it isn't much fun in the real world to play through a level twice in order to have the images cached. you will need to create an autoexec.cfg in your q4base directory with one of the following configurations.
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "10480"
seta r_useCachedDynamicModels "1"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "2048"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512"
seta image_downSizeBump "1"
seta image_downSizeLimit "2048"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "2048"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_preload "1"
that's for 1024MB System Ram w/ 512MB graphics framebuffer (my own rig.)
seta image_cacheMegs "128"
seta image_cacheMinK "10480"
seta r_useCachedDynamicModels "1"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512"
seta image_downSizeBump "1"
seta image_downSizeLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "1024"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_preload "1"
512MB System 256MB Video
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "10480"
seta r_useCachedDynamicModels "1"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512"
seta image_downSizeBump "1"
seta image_downSizeLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "1024"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_preload "1"
1024MB System 256MB Video
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "10480"
seta r_useCachedDynamicModels "1"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "512"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "256"
seta image_downSizeBump "1"
seta image_downSizeLimit "512"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_preload "1"
1024MB System 128MB Video
with the new autoexec.cfg in place Quake IV will run smoother than any game you've played before. you won't have to worry about any special console commands to load it, the engine recognizes the config automatically. good luck. :hehe:

addendum: this also applies to Doom 3 as the engines are so similar. i would imagine it works with the up and coming QuakeWars as well.
